FS# 248: Gomorrah / If.... / Top 5 Movies We Probably Got Wrong

March 6: On this 4th Anniversary episode of Filmspotting... Adam and Matty go to the mattresses for a review of "Gomorrah," the acclaimed new Italian gangster film that demystifies and strips any pretense of romance from cinema's beloved depictions of the mafia. Next, the guys wrap-up their Angry Young Men Marathon with a discussion of "If...," Lindsay Anderson's 1968 film starring a very young Malcolm McDowell as a burgeoning revolutionary trapped in an English boarding school. Filmspotting then marks its show milestone by confessing the Top 5 Movies We Probably Got Wrong -- including a visit from an old friend.

Also on the show: Massacre Theatre -- presented by In Review Online -- Listener Feedback and music by Gregory and the Hawk ... Download from iTunes here.

NOTES/CORRECTIONS
- Filmspotting made its debut (as Cinecast) on March 6, 2005.

- If it sounds like Matty said "Jonas" at one point instead of "Jonah," um, that's because he did.

- Jeff Goldsmith's Creative Screenwriting Podcast interview "Gomorrah" director Matteo Garrone and writer Maurizio Braucci, can be accessed through iTunes here.

- Apologies to 1StrongOpinion in the FS Message Boards. He came up with this week's poll question.

- Cate Blanchett has been nominated for 5 Oscars, twice for Actress in a Leading Role (the "Elizabeth" movies). Her only win was, in fact, for Supporting Actress in "The Aviator."

- Couple lines from Mick Travis in "If...." Adam was reaching for: "War is the last possible creative act" ... "One man can change the world with a bullet in the right place."

- The New Hollywood Marathon lineup will be posted soon our our Marathons page.

- Other "Hannah and Her Sisters" tie-ins, of course -- Frederick's lines about wrestling and the Oscars/"The Wrestler" and Penelope Cruz winning an Oscar for Woody Allen's latest, "Vicki Cristina Barcelona."

FS #245: Coraline / This Sporting Life / 2009 Oscar Picks

Feb. 13
There once was a boy
Who listened to Filmspotting
For all of his movie reviews
But then one day he tired of their games
And yelled, "Come on guys, get a clue!"

But Adam and Matty -- not to be crossed
Came in the still of the night
Next day his parents searched high and low
Of the boy could be found not a sight!

Yet on the wind it is said if you listen just so,
You can hear a boy whisp'ring: "Matty's right!"

This week the guys don their best Vincent Price and Eartha Kitt voices to dissect the creepy new stop-motion animated film from director Henry Selick, "Coraline." Then, Richard Harris joins the ranks of Albert Finney and Richard Burton in the calvacade of great performances reviewed in the Filmspotting Angry Young Men Marathon. Harris stars as a disaffected rugby player in Lindsay Anderson's "This Sporting Life."

Plus, denied entry into the Shrine Auditorium and not wanting their rented purple velour tuxedoes to go to waste, Adam and Matty hold their own version of the Academy Awards in a nearby Jack-in-the-Box parking lot and predict who will and who should win the 2009 Oscars.
