Round 1 Matches & Results
Verdicts
Graphical Brackets

This will likely be much less convoluted than it seems Smiley  Direct questions for clarification here, there might be bugs to work out, but it seems rather set

Nine brackets, each starting with 31 films.

The order of pairs to be assigned is already determined and will be undisclosed to dissuade jockeying for un/favored films.  When a pair is requested it will come from the top of the queue.  If a film is unavailable to you, it is then up for grabs for whoever is interested and able to acquire it.  If you are assigned a pair that you do not want, you can – once during bracket play – toss it back into the queue without penalty.  If, after returning one pair to the queue, you are assigned another pair that you do not want – at any subsequent point of bracket play – returning the pair to the queue disqualifies you from play during the current and next round.

If there are films that are deemed unplayable due to availability, release date, or US-status the pair they were a part of will be set aside to be completed after all other playable pairs are completed for the current round.  Once other pairs are completed, every individual that completed at least one pair (in a timely manner) will suggest a film to replace each of the unplayable film(s), e.g., if there are two films that need to be replaced, each individual can suggest two films.  All suggested films will then be voted on by all individuals that completed verdicts in the 80s bracket.  These films will then be repaired and round play will be completed.  These suggested films can be current round resurrections

Round 1 Play

Once the fifteen pairs in all brackets are finished, nine resurrections will be filled in against the”31st films”, the winners of that pair will then complete the brackets as the 16th films of Round 2.

Round 1 resurrections will be determined by (a) the persons that submit the most verdicts for the round, (b) a consensus poll, similar to that noted above, and (c) invisibly attached to pairs that were completed during Round 1’s play.

(a) Verdict Resurrections - the person that writes the most verdicts for the round will earn one Round 1 resurrection and one Round 2 resurrection good for resurrection of a Round 1 or Round 2 film.  The Round 1 resurrection will be the last resurrected film chosen (similar to how we submitted 3-lists to begin the bracket).  This person will also have the option to place their Round 1 resurrected film in any of the brackets or have placement determined at random, if they prefer; this person will have first option for placement (if they desire).  The person with the second most verdicts will earn one Round 1 resurrection, and the option to place it in any bracket (after person 1), and one Round 2 resurrection, good for Round 2 films only.  The person with the third most verdicts will earn one Round 1 resurrection and the option to place it in any bracket (after persons 1 and 2).  If there are ties, earnings will fall into the appropriate level of award and resurrections beyond 3 will reduce the number of consensus resurrections.

(b) Consensus Resurrections – there will be 2 CRs for Round 1 (unless ties increase the number of VRs).  Each person that writes a Round 1 verdict can submit a title to be voted in, submitting verdict also earns a vote – titles with the Top 2 votes will be resurrected, run-off in case of tie.

(c) Random Resurrections – four pairs in Round 1 will be marked with a “resurrection credit”.   Once all the Round’s pairs are complete the tagged films will be revealed and resurrections granted.  The order of choosing which films are to be resurrected is here determined by the amount of verdicts the individual that has the credit has finished.  E.g., the 4 credits go to Chris, Kelly, Pat, and Kim, Chris wrote 10 verdicts, Kelly 7, Pat, 3, and Kim 1 – Kim will choose the first resurrection film, Pat the second, etc.  If the number of verdicts written is more than the average, then these people will choose their resurrected films after the Consensus Resurrections.  If one or more individuals have written the same amount of verdicts, the individuals that have taken, on average, the least amount of time to complete their verdicts will choose their films later.

Round 2 Play

In the nine brackets, 16 films remain for 8 pairs each.  As in Round 1, the queue of films is invisible, first come, first served.  Same holds in the event of a film being ruled ineligible.

Round 2 resurrections will be determined in a similar manner.  There are 2 resurrections already earned from Round 1, they can be used only to resurrect Round 2 losers.  In addition to the 2 Round 1 resurrections, there will be 3 VRs, 1 CR, and 3 RRs – thus 9 total*.  These resurrected films will compete against randomly chosen remaining films, 1 per bracket.  This will be known as Round 2.5, this winner of the pair will fill the Round 3 slot.

As in R1, the VRs are earned by writing the most verdicts.  The person that writes the most verdicts will earn a resurrection that can be used for a R1, R2, or R3 loser, and can fill in any bracket’s resurrection slot – first choice for most verdicts, if desired.  The person that writes the second most verdicts can resurrect a R1 or R2 loser, and can fill any bracket’s resurrection slot, after person 1.  The person with the third most verdicts earns a R2 resurrection and third choice in placement, if desired.  After the VRs are chosen and placed, the remaining resurrection slots will each shift a bracket higher, i.e., Bracket 1’s resurrection slot will take the place of Bracket 2’s, while Bracket 9’s will move to Bracket 1.

The CR will be chosen in the same manner as in R1, with the possibility that there will not be a CR if there is a tie for VRs.

The RRs will again be invisibly attached to R2 pairs.  The power of RRs will be determined by the speed that the individual has finished their verdicts:

   Type               This Verdict      Average Verdict
   Swap-out, R2 or R3         <3 days      <5 days
   Swap-out, R2            <5 days      <1 week
   Resurrection+, R1-3         <1 week      <2 weeks
   Resurrection+, R1-2         <2 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection, R2         <3 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection3, R2         >3 weeks

The swap-out allows the individual to choose any bracket-appropriate film they would like added to the bracket – either previously un-included or defeated – and chose a remaining film to kick out.  A Resurrection+ also allows for the inclusion of a film previously not in the bracket, though does not need to.  The Resurrection3 does not enable the individual to choose a film for resurrection, but 3 films that they would like considered, and then the choice between these films is made by polling all individuals that have so far completed a verdict for the bracket.  If the Average Verdict is in a lesser category than This Verdict, the power of the Type will drop by 1 category; if the AV is in a better category, the power will increase by 1, e.g.:

Chris wrote up Film A vs. Film B, which had a RR attached.  It took Chris 4 days to complete the write-up, this would be on-track for a “Swap-out, R2”, but of all of Chris’ R2 verdicts, the average amount of time that the verdict was returned was 10 days, thus shifting the strength of the Type to a “Resurrection+, R1-3”.  Had Chris’ verdicts averaged <1 week, the Type would have stayed “Swap-out, R2”, but if this verdict was an anomaly, and Chris’ verdicts were returned on average <5 days, then the power of the RR would shift to “Swap-out, R2 or R3”.

If 9 resurrections are not played during R2, unaffected brackets will remain unchanged.

Round 3 Play

In each the 9 brackets 8 films remain, 4 pairs each.  Play is the same as in previous rounds.

There are no CRs in R3, unless of the RR, Type R3 variety.  The person that completes the most write-ups will earn a R+1-3 and have the option to assign their film to any bracket; if there is a tie for verdicts completed, whoever has the lowest turnaround average will earn the resurrection.  There will be 3 RRs in play:

   Type               This Verdict      Average Verdict
   Swap-out, R3 or R4         <3 days      <5 days
   Swap-out, R3            <5 days      <1 week
   Resurrection+, R1-4         <1 week      <2 weeks
   Resurrection+, R1-3         <2 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection, R3         <3 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection3, R3         >3 weeks

Resurrections will “shift-up” brackets.

Round 4 Play

In each the 9 brackets 4 films remain, 2 pairs each.  Play is the same as in previous rounds.

There is 1 CR, which will be determined first; all currently losing films are eligible for resurrection, any individual that has completed a verdict can offer a film for polling and vote – highest vote-getter is resurrected; re-poll in case of tie.  Then 2 resurrections attached to R4 pairs:

Type               This Verdict      Average Verdict
   Swap-out, R4            <5 days      <1 week
   Resurrection+, R1-4         <1 week      <2 weeks
   Resurrection+, R3-4         <2 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection, R4         <3 weeks      <3 weeks
   Resurrection3, R4         >3 weeks

Round 5 Play

This round determines which film wins each bracket – 9 pairs competing.  There is one mini-CR.  At the end of play for R5, 5 individuals that have completed verdicts in at least 2 rounds will be chosen at random.  Each individual must have an average completion rate <3 weeks, if an individual does not, their spot will be reassigned to another randomly chosen individual.  These 5 individuals will decide on one more film to resurrect, that film will then compete against one of the 9 remaining films chosen at random.

Round Robin Play

The remaining 9 films will compete in a Round Robin, thus 36 pairs – 1vs2, 2vs3, 1vs3, etc.  Individuals that are interested in participating in Round Robin play will be assigned their pair(s) at random, and have 2 weeks to complete their write-up, if the write-up is not complete within 2 weeks, the pair will be tossed back into the queue for reassignment.

But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.
