Since throwing out random ideas is fun...

Somehow, all the performances polls have got me wondering if instead of a 1980s US Bracket, it'd be potentially more interesting to do a worldwide bracket for a single year (whether in the 80s or earlier).  Then, at the conclusion of the bracket, we could do a retro Filmspots for that year, bringing into play a few films that weren't quite bracket worthy but still have a great performance or score or whatever.

I don't know, I think that would make the bracket less anti-climactic, maybe.

Very intriguing.

I don't think I'd participate in that.

Sounds interesting to me. Potentially more interesting than a 80s US Bracket.

sounds fun.  there is still the age-old problem of narrowing the initial field  Shocked

I personally would rather just stick to an 80's bracket.

in advance, sorry for the unpixote-like layout.

inspired by 1SO's recent poll on lists, i culled all the 80s US films from the Filmspot 100, TSPDT 1000, The Guardian's 1000, IMDB's 250, Rosenbaum's 1000, and Criterion's catalogue, each entry is noted with the lists it appears on.  this is the base of the 80s bracket.  if you feel a film should not be included due to a different national identity or release date, feel free to bring it up, changes can be made over the course of the next week.  i believe i have included all titles, apologies if not.  though there will be more total films, and one more round, bracket-fatigue is addressed by fewer, and tweaked, resurrections.

1)  if you are interested in contributing films to the bracket, you may do so by Friday June 19, midnight central.
     a)  each person can contribute three titles to add;
     b)  titles will be added to the base on a semi-queue, semi-participation basis.  individuals that have submitted
          the most verdicts for the 90s US and Far East brackets will have their titles added to the base after the
          films of their peers who have participated less.  in the event that there is an equal standing of bracket
          participation, individuals that have submitted their titles-to-add first will have their titles added to the
          base later.  e.g.:

               chris submitted 30 bracket verdicts and sent 80s titles in on Wed at noon;
               kelly submitted 30 bracket verdicts and sent 80s titles in on Friday at 9:00;
               pat submitted 10 bracket verdicts and sent 80s titles in on Friday at 9:00;
               alex submitted no bracket verdicts and sent 80s titles in on Wednesday at noon;
               nat submitted no bracket verdicts and sent 80s titles in on Friday at 9:00

             this means that the order that the 80s titles will be added to the base will be, from first to last - nat,
             alex, pat, kelly, and chris.  the presumed advantage to having one's films added later is (obviously) so
             that earlier additions that others make might take the place for a film that you would have otherwise
             added, now freeing you to submit your 4th, etc., choice:  nat might want All of Me,
             Breakin', and C.H.U.D. added, and because nat's films are added to
             the base first, alex's desire to have Breakin' added to the base is now taken care of so alex
             is freed-up to add Death Wish II, etc.  this means that you will need to submit a ranked
             list of titles you want to add, and it would make sense to include several titles in the event that one of
             your first three is added by someone else
, this thread's first post has a list of some possible titles.
             also note that i include articles as important to title, just as the boys did in High Fidelity
     c) if you prefer to submit finalized titles after persons earlier in the queue have made their choices, a
         realish-time option is available.  the base addition process will begin Saturday June 20, at 3:00pm central.
         you must still provide me with placeholder titles to determine your queue location (and in the event that
         your intention to participate live is thwarted by fate).  persons not present for the base-addition process
         will have their titles automatically added; those present will have a two minute window to finalize their
         titles.
     d) once all titles have been added to the base, the 80s US pool is "set".
2)  Once all additions to the base are made, the bracket proper will be set.
     a) this includes determining how many poll-ins, resurrections, and swap-outs will be needed to balance out
         the number of titles;
        i)  resurrections will be granted by (a) amount of participation in verdicts, and (b) lot.  resurrections will on
            occasion be of the variety that can "reach-back" to previous rounds, they will also occasionally (in earlier
            rounds only) be of the variety that can  bring new titles into the bracket;
        ii) poll-ins will be scattered through the rounds, similar to a resurrection, a film comes back, but by poll of
            all those who have previously submitted verdicts for the 80s bracket;
        iii)swap-outs will be an occasional treat that will be granted like resurrections, but instead of merely
            bringing back a defeated title, the person pushes out a film that had previously "won" its match; clearly,
            the swap-in does not fill a bracket slot, instead it is a "token" a participant uses at round's end;
        iv) the design for play in the later rounds will be set before any bracket play begins
     b) the matches for the bracket will be determined at random, by drawing, and set from the beginning
        i)  spaces for resurrected and poll-in films will be saved just as a slot for any other film;
        ii) i will conduct the drawing of match-ups in chicago, hopefully with other interested filmspotters (and
            possibly web-cammed), at a yet-to-be-determined time;
3)  play in the bracket will be "blind":
     a)  i will, with one other person, draw matches at random.  only the two of us will know the order of
          matches.  this means that when Person A is ready for their pair, whatever match is at the top of the queue
          will be the pair Person A is assigned.
        i) in the event that Person A is unable to secure one or both titles, a call will go out to others that are
           interested and able to acquire the title(s), the pair will then be reassigned to that person, and Person A
           will take take the next title in the queue;
        ii) in the event that Person A is uninterested/unwilling to accept a pair, they have to option to throw back
            the match, but this is only an option at only one point during bracket play, on the second occasion,
            Person A will be opting out from play in the current - and following - round;
        iii) in the event that a title is unavailable to all people, that title's place will be taken by a poll-in by all
             members that have completed a verdict at that point of the 80s bracket play

I didn't see these on the list, and these are the ones I would nominate initially,

1) Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
2) On Golden Pond (1981)
3) Videodrome (1983)
4) Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)
5) Sixteen Candles (1984)
6) They Live (1988)

But, if we can only nominate three then just take the top three. However, I need clarification on Videodrome. Technically it's a Canadian film, but are we doing a non-US/European/Far East bracket as well, or are Canadian films going to be included with the US ones?

the empire strikes back is there.  sorry, i can't do the star wars: episode V thing, feels a betrayal to my youth
videodrome would be canadian, i'd argue

So, what happens with Canadian films then, or have we not gotten that far in our planning yet?

I'll read all this over and offer input tomorrow. As for now I notice some things whilst glancing over the list.

Basil would say The Great Mouse Detective needs to be there, I would say Oliver and Company is more deserving of a spot, and the majority of people would likely gravitate toward The Little Mermaid.

they will go into a bracket for films of the empire, or somesuch as designed by pix, face, &co., basically non-US english-speaking regions.

if basil wants that, i'll let him say so.  and if you'd like Oliver and Company and/or The Little Mermaid, feel free to rank them in a list for me Smiley

I believe 3 nominations was the limit, so here are my official three then,

1) On Golden Pond (1981)
2) Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)
3) Sixteen Candles (1984)

you'll get three of your films in, but you might want to suggest more than three titles in case someone else picks some of the same titles that you did.  for example, just a few posts ago ses submitted a list that also included On Golden Pond, though ranked #4.  pretend her titles were to get added to the base list before your titles, then "your" On Golden Pond would not count.  that being the case, it would make sense for you to have something in your 4-slot to make-up for On Golden Pond not counting - you were onto something with that initial list of 6 Smiley
