Rather than aimlessly bash the Oscars and what ever other bigoted award systems exist, I thought it might be nice if we make our own picks, as a community.

Nominations by January 15 (to accommodate There Will Be Blood). Votes by February 1st. Winners announced Sunday, February 10th.

In each category, you have a maximum of 3 nominations. They should be numbered in order.

Here's a sample:

Best Picture
1. Juno
2. Sunshine
3. No Country for Old Men

That is how they should look. We will then give 3 points to Juno, 2 to Sunshine, and 1 to NCOM. If there are no numbers (which happened with a ballot we received), we will award each nomination 2 points.  We will then choose the 5 films or performances with the most points in each category and they will appear on the final ballot. Don't worry, pix and I have this all quite organized thanks to Google Docs.

Nominations should be sent via private message or email to both me and pixote.

For most categories, you can just state the film (it will be easier this way). In other words, for original screenplay, it won't be necessary to say Diablo Cody for Juno, but just Juno.

Categories:

Picture
Director
Original Screenplay
Adapted Screenplay
Actor
Actress
Supporting Actor
Supporting Actress
Ensemble cast
Editing
Foreign Language Film
Soundtrack
Score
Animated Film
Documentary
Art direction
Sound editing
Visual Effects
Cinematography
Make-up
Costumes

Fun categories:

Kick-ass scene
Trailer
Villain
Surprising performance
Surprising film
Debut Feature
Best line
Worst film
Breakthrough (can be an actor or filmmaker of any sort)

Don't forget about the For Your Consideration thread.  The first page of the thread includes a master list of all films mentioned as possible nominees (to date), along the award categories that have been linked to each film by potential voters.  A sample:

     The Bourne Ultimatum
     Actor (Matt Damon)
     Supporting Actress (Julia Stiles)
     Editing
     Sound Editing
     Score
     Surprising Performance (Matt Damon)
     Kickass Scene (Waterloo Station)
     Kickass Scene (Tangier Rooftop Chase/Fight)
Line ("Because if that was true we'd be having this conversation face to face.")
     Trailer

You're not restricted to the names on this list.  It's just a tool to help jog your memory and see some of the nominees that other voters have come up with.  It's also useful for determining whether a given performance should be considered a lead role (Actor or Actress) or a supporting role (Supporting Actor or Supporting Actress).

Good luck!

Great idea, I'm in.

Especially like the 3 nominations part, keep that.  So much more interesting than just picking 1.

I'm in.

For a name, how about:

The Spot Ons 2007

For disappointing films, The Spotties

One category:

Vanperbolic (the rare instance where the film turned out better than Adam, Matty or even Sam thought)

The awards for the good films could be called the Alexes.
The awards for disappointing films could also be called the Alexes.
Your eponyms may vary.

Yep.  Let's set a few deadlines.

Decide on categories by December 15th. Nominations by January 15 (to accommodate There Will Be Blood). Votes by February 1st. Winners announced Sunday, February 10th.

So far, categories are:

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Screenplay (all-inclusive or separate for adapted/original?)
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress

If three people agree on another category, then we'll add it to the list. We can do some goofy ones as well, of course.

Should the award be that spot in the upper right hand corner of the film that tells the projectionist to get the next reel ready?

The cigarette burn? Sure, sounds like a good option to consider.

Anyone like these?

Best Cinematography
Best Debut Feature
Best Foreign Language
Best Trailer
Best Soundtrack

I vote yes to all of those except foreign language. They're just as eligible for every category as American films.

I'm in!

I think there should be a seperate award for the screenwriting, both original and adaptations.

Yes, for Foreign-Language Film (and they're still eligible for the Best Picture Filmspot)

I also want to have awards for the more technical stuff (for the technical geeks) like special effects, editing, sound, art direction, and such.
