Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have a new photography competition, which will run
June 4-July 4. This competition is unlike previous ones; Adam, Sam, the other moderators, nor I will have anything to do with choosing the winners. That leaves everyone open to compete except me as I will be supplying at least one of the prizes.
The winners will be chosen by a combination of outside judges and your votes. Let me get to that in a bit. First things first.
Prizes Grand Prize – Filmspotting engraved 4 gig iPod nano
2 Runners-up – $25 Amazon gift certificate
How to Play 1. Open a flickr account. It’s free! If possible, please choose a name that is close to or the same as your board name. Request an invitation to the
Filmspotting Photography Competition Group. Post in this thread below or somehow get a request to winrit, Lynch, saltine, or me. Join now; join later. Late joiners are welcome throughout the contest.
2. Take pictures with a digital camera according to the themes listed below. Pictures should be original photographs taken for this competition. Broad and/or clever interpretation of the themes is encouraged.
3. Upload your pictures to your flickr account and send them to the
Filmspotting Photography Competition Group pool in flickr.
Please name pictures so I can tell which picture goes with which theme. This is very important as it will be our responsibility to make sure your picture gets seen by the judges. You are allowed to send one picture to the group per day. See this helpful
How To. It's also
here.4. Our two judges will choose 1, 2, or 3 winning photographs per theme.
5. At the end of the contest, when all themes and theme winners are announced, voting starts. You, the people who participate in this contest, will choose the three winners from amongst the theme winners. (You will not be able to vote for yourself.) In the event of a tie at first place, there will be a run-off vote. More on voting when that time comes.
6. Since the schedule is known, feel free to snap pictures in anticipation of an upcoming theme.
Judges/JudgingAnthony Behar:
http://www.anthonybehar.com and
http://apachu.blogspot.com Tom Maddrey:
http://www.tommaddrey.comUpon asking them to judge, I made them both aware that you guys, the entrants, come from a wide variety of talents and stregths. They are approaching the competition with a sense that above all, this a
FUN activity.
All are welcome. These guys have done a hell of a lot of voluntary work over the past week in anticipation of this competition. I haven't thanked them enough for the commitment they've shown. If it is in your heart, I ask that you give them some golf claps.
Tony Behar is a listener of Filmspotting. He's familiar with any inside jokes that may come with these themes. Tom has a strong technical background in photography, and knows his stuff when it comes to composition and execution. I really lucked out with these two guys. You'll see from their websites they have two very different portfolios. In the past week, they've shown a great deal of respect for each other's work.
These are a few things the judges want you to know about as they go about what they do. Some of this may go without saying, but in the interest of "better safe than sorry" here it is:
• Have fun, be creative and enjoy what you are doing.
• Please avoid nudity or sex (unless necessary to get point across)
• Please demonstrate basic respect for race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
• Photoshop retouching is welcomed, but should be used only to accomplish what cannot be done photographically
• Photoshop enhancements will not count towards better score in fairness to those who don't have the skill or ability to use it.
• Photos should be original clever and witty and express a point of view that is clear and easy to understand.
• Contestants images should have a clear reference to the topic or subject.
• Execution and originality wins over technical post-production enhancement.
• Have fun, be creative and enjoy what you are doing. (repeated for emphasis)
Because these guys will be on opposite sides of the United States and they want to discuss the images, the judging may take more than one day. Please, continue taking and sending pictures to the pool if it does.
Schedule and Themes All dates are in United States, Central DST – Chicago, Dallas (GMT – 6:00) The cutoff time for getting pictures to the pool is 10:00 pm US CDT the night before judging begins. This will give the mods time to organize the pictures for the judges.
