The Cinemix

Last week Sam and I mentioned a great mix CD compiled and sent to us by one of our listeners, Ryan Heller. If you're curious about checking out the tracks and artists, click here. The songs aren't movie related -- just a good mix of songs that Sam and I are both enjoying.

Thanks to listeners Robert Turnage and Mike Weston, you can also find the tracks and download them on iTunes and eMusic. Robert set up the iTunes mix here ... Mike set up the 10 tracks he could find on eMusic here.

Adam's Top 5 (or 6) Tracks on Cinemix:
1. Vincent O'Brien, M. Ward
2. A History of Lovers, Calexico/Iron & Wine
3. John Wayne Gacy, Jr., Sufjan Stevens
4. Secret Meeting, The Nationals
5. (tie) Carolina Rain, Ryan Adams/First Day of My Life, Bright Eyes

Sam's Top 5:

Cinecast #80: Tarkovsky/Oscar Blunders

If only there were iPods in the 15th century, I could listen to Cinecast #80.

Overlooked Auteurs/Oscar Blunders: For part two of the Overlooked Auteurs Marathon, Cinecast attempts to contribute something meaningful to the conversation about Russian master Andrei Tarkovsky. How did Adam and Sam fare? Well, the most insightful thing you'll probably hear is a quote from Ingmar Bergman. That being said, if their reverent discussion prompts even a few listeners to check out Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" (1966) and "Solaris (1972), then their efforts will be rewarded.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback and our countdown of the Top 5 Oscar Blunders.

Music by Puerto Muerto and My Morning Jacket courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Cinecast #79: Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story

Knowing us Rob and Steve, knowing you Adam and Sam in Cinecast #79.

Tristram Shandy: Want to avoid the inevitable criticism that your movie adaptation doesn't hold a candle to the book it's based on? Choose an obscure 18th century novel -- widely regarded as "unfilmable" -- that most people haven't heard of, never mind actually read. That's what director Michael Winterbottom did with his adaptation of Laurence Sterne's comic novel "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" -- ranked 8th on the list of the world's greatest novels ... chronologically. Adam and Sam agree that "Tristram Shandy" fulfills the basic criterion for any successful comedy (i.e. it's really funny), but disagree slightly on whether it succeeds entirely at anything else. Indisputably clear is the comic genius of star Steve Coogan and co-star Rob Brydon.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5 ... Oscar Blunders.

Music by The Pale Pacific ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

As promised during Listener Feedback, here is the track listing for the mix CD compiled and sent to us by Ryan Heller from the band Aberdeen City.

Slight Show Delay

As a few really close listeners might have caught near the end of last Friday's podcast, I've been suffering from a head cold for about a week now and it's only getting worse. As a result, Sam and I are going to put off recording for a day.

Cinecast #79 with a review of "Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story," Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and our Top 5 Preview will be available early Thursday morning (before 7 am CST) instead of Wednesday.

Cinecast #80 with a look at Tarkovksy's "Andrei Rublev" and "Solaris" and our Top 5 Oscar Blunders will be available early Friday morning (also before 7 am CST). Thanks for your patience!

Cinecast Special Edition: Overlooked Road Movies

You know what's really overlooked, Cinecast? My @#!& acting chops!

Overlooked DVD Picks of the Week: With so many great road movies to choose from for last week's Top 5, Adam and Sam had a couple left over worth sharing. And they couldn't be more different. Adam went to the art-house for his pick; Sam went to the out-house... er, the drive-in.

Note: If you notice some peculiar clicking noises in the background, you're not crazy. The Chicago Tribune assigned a photographer to come out and snap some photos of us 'in action' for a story.

Cinecast #78: Thumbsucker/Top 5 Road Movies

I'll stop sucking my thumb when you finally review my movie.

Thumbsucker/Top 5 Road Movies: Taking a brief digression from their Overlooked Auteurs Marathon for a movie they overlooked in 2005, Adam and Sam put Andrei Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" on hold for a week in order to discuss director Mike Mills' feature debut "Thumbsucker." Recently released on DVD, "Thumbsucker" got Cinecast's attention last summer with its quirky preview and its cast, which features Vince Vaughn, Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio and Keanu Reeves in supporting roles. As it turns out, the curiosity was justified. Very much in the Hal Ashby-via-Wes Anderson school of filmmaking, Mills' dreamy tale of suburban teenage angst isn't quite as sharp or as sad Anderson's recent films, but its sincerity and humor (not to mention its inspired casting of Reeves as a new age-hippie orthodontist) had Adam and Sam wishing this movie was around when they were in high school.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback and our Top 5 Road Movies.

Tune in next Friday for the return of our Overlooked Auteurs Marathon. We'll discuss Andrei Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" and "Solaris."

Cinecast #77: Transamerica

Brooding will only turn you bitter ... like Sam in Cinecast #77.

Transamerica: Sharing elements from such disparate sources as unflinching, issue-driven art house films and road trip comedies, writer/director Duncan Tucker's "Transamerica" is a strange marriage of genres. The movie has been getting a lot of attention for its Oscar-nominated star Felicity Huffman, and Adam and Sam agree that Huffman is very good as the transgendered Bree. The movie itself, however, provokes another bitter battle. Is "Transamerica" a flawed but enjoyable and funny film that treats its subject matter with respect? Or is it a film so cliche-ridden that it potentially qualifies for "so bad it's good" status? Listen and find out...

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5 ... Road Movies.

Schedule Change

Due to a DVD mix-up on our end, Cinecast will not be discussing Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" this Friday ... In its place, we've decided to spend a few minutes on an overlooked film from last year, Thumbsucker. We'll merge our discussions of "Rublev" and "Solaris" next Friday. So for those of you playing along at home, you now have an extra week to find six hours to spend with Tarkovsky. Good luck.

Cinecast #76: Most Anticipated Movies of 2006

With these hands, I could snap Adam and Sam like a twig.

Overlooked Auteurs #2/Most Anticipated Movies: After having their eyes opened to the visceral charms of Samuel Fuller last week with "Shock Corridor," Adam and Sam continue their Overlooked Auteurs Marathon with Fuller's 1980 WWII epic The Big Red One. Recently reconstructed by film historian and critic Richard Schickel, Fuller's film is either a "complete masterpiece," or a skillfully made and unsentimental war movie that is slightly undercut by its episodic structure. One thing Adam and Sam completely agree on: Lee Marvin. Is. A total. Badass.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback and our Top 5 Most Anticipated Movies of 2006.

Cinecast #75: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Got a grave ready here for anyone who don't like my movie.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada: When actors become directors, it's hard not to watch their films through the filter of their screen personas. As an actor, Tommy Lee Jones's depiction of hard-bitten, no-nonsense characters has almost reached the level of caricature (e.g. "Man Of The House"). Not unlike one of his characters, Jones's feature film directing debut -- The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada -- is tough and, at times, absurdly funny. But is it any good? Your Cinecast hosts split on the film and engage in a border war about whether the film was authentic and genuinely moving, or inauthentic and emotionally bullying ... whatever that means.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5 ... Most Anticipated Movies of 2006.

Cinecast #74: Murder & Mayhem

I wonder what Adam and Sam are doing right now.

Overlooked Auteurs #1/Murder Mysteries: Having just filled in the gaps of a spotty Hitchcock education with a six-week Master-of-Suspense Marathon, Adam and Sam set out into more obscure territory with a six-week Overlooked Auteurs Marathon. First up: two films by mid-century provocateur Samuel Fuller. Sensationalist, genius, or both? Fuller's 1963 film "Shock Corridor" is the subject of this week's discussion.

Also on the show, we hand out The MacGuffins, our best of the Hitchcock Marathon Awards, share some Listener Feedback, and reveal our Top 5 Murder Mysteries. Will Hitchcock's "Rear Window" make our lists? A murderer -- I mean, critic -- would never parade his picks on his blog...

Cinecast #73: Bubblicious

Listen to Cinecast #73

Bubble: If you're a major filmmaker and make a movie starring non-actors for less than $2 million dollars -- and you release it simultaneously in theatres, on DVD and on high definition television -- people are bound to describe it as an "experiment." But Adam and Sam agree that "Bubble," the latest from director Steven Soderbergh, works both as digital environmental art and as a genuinely suspenseful -- if atypical -- slice of small-town life. Adam wants to wait until Soderbergh's planned six-part site-specific series is complete to pass final judgment; Sam is ready to slap his "1st tier Soderbergh" seal of approval on the film right now.
