Cinecast #72: Get Busy Livin' ... Or Get Busy Narrating

I wanted a podcast, and for my sins they gave me Cinecast #72

Hitchcock Marathon #6/Top 5 Movies with Narrators: Movie narration gets a (largely deserved) bad rap, but Adam and Sam manage to cobble together a couple respectable Top 5 Movies w/ Narrators lists ... that somehow don't include a single movie narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Also on the show, we close out the Master-of-Suspense Marathon with a discussion of "Frenzy," Hitchcock's penultimate film. Plus, listeners dish on their biggest Man-Crushes, Girl-Crushes and the Best Films of 2005.

Music by The Meat Purveyors and 16 Horsepower courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Cinecast is brought to you by Peerflix. Trade your DVDs online at peerflix.com/cinecast.

Cinecast A/V #5: 1st Annual 'Durdens' - Badass of the Year

Tyler hit Adam and Sam until they named their Badass Award after him.

OK, so video podcasting is not for the faint of heart. After four remarkably tepid episodes of Cinecast A/V, Adam and Sam took some time off to consider the video spin-off's future. After eight weeks of brainstorming, this is the result. Sure, the 'set' is still bland, and the guys apparently broke into their daddy's closets in an attempt to imitate "Anchorman's" 'Action News' team -- but hey, it is an 'awards' show. Prepare to have your mind blown.

On the show, Adam and Sam reveal their Overlooked DVD Picks of the Week, and hand out the 1st Annual Badass of the Year Awards -- 'The Durdens'.

As a regular Cinecast subscriber, you'll get the audio version of Cinecast A/V delivered the same way you get our Wednesday and Friday shows. If you have a video iPod, you can subscribe to Cinecast A/V via this separate feed -- http://feeds.feedburner.com/cinecastav -- to have the video version automatically downloaded to your player. Of course, if you don't have one of the video iPods, you can still subscribe and watch the show in iTunes. Or, just watch it here on the cinecastshow site -- Windows Media and Quicktime versions are available above.

Cinecast #71: Brave New World

Sam and Adam say I'm way better than you in Cinecast #71, ha ha.

The New World: Lyrical, elliptical, discontinuous, oblique... Sam and Adam bust out the Art Film Dictionary for their discussion of Terrence Malick's latest "The New World." A love story at the bloody dawn of American colonization, Malick's first film since 1998's "The Thin Red Line" has all the ingredients of a grand historical romance. But as he has in each of the four films that comprise his filmography since 1973's "Badlands," Malick frustrates expectations and challenges his audience. Although Adam found his bearings quicker than Sam, both came to admire the film for its accumulative power. Particularly good: Q'Orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas, who, remarkably, was only 14 when filming began.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5 ... Movies with Narrators.

Music by Dan Bern courtesy of Messenger Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Programming Notes

I know we promoted the Top 5 Performances of 2005 for this week, but Sam and I decided that we'd covered a lot of that ground already last week. Plus, the Oscars are coming up... So, we've decided to do our Top 5 Movies with Narrators, tying in with "The New World." Also, Thursday on Cinecast A/V we'll have some Overlooked DVD picks and hand out the 'Durdens', our awards for Badass of the Year.

Cinecast #70: Best/Worst of 2005 (Part I)

Those Cinecast twits better recognize this movie and how great we are in it.

Best/Worst of 2005 (Part I): Since its debut last March, Cinecast has spent roughly 200 hours at the movies. For this special 2005 Year in Review episode, Adam and Sam tried to distill all that cinematic input into an hour-long conversation ... and failed miserably. Your windbag hosts managed to talk long past the average length of a feature-length movie, so we decided -- at the last minute, naturally -- to split the show into two parts. Part II featuring Masscare Theatre and our Top 5 Movies of 2005 will be posted Friday.

In this installment, hear the first half of Cinecast's Best Movies of 2005, plus our picks for the Worst of 2005, the biggest Breakthroughs, Surprises and Cameos. Also, a quick look at "Vertigo" -- the 5th film in our six-week Hitchcock Marathon. We'll close out the Hitch Marathon next week with "Frenzy."

Music by Jude from the album "No One Is Really Beautiful" ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Cinecast #69: Your Cheating Heart Will Tell On You

Farley Granger and Robert Walker in Strangers On A Train

Hitchcock Marathon #4/Top 5 Cheating Hearts: If the idea behind the Cinecast Marathons is to finally see what all the fuss is about -- whether it be John Ford, Tobe Hooper or Cary Grant -- week four of the Hitchcock Marathon may be the week that officially made believers of Adam and Sam. The first three weeks featured plenty of highs, but with "Strangers On A Train," Hitchcock's 1951 adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith thriller, your Cinecast hosts show the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved only for John Wayne and the Cinecast Frappr Map.

Also on the show, Listener Voicemails, Listener Top 5's, and our Top 5 Cheating Hearts ... Movies About Adultery.

Note: Just one (extended) show next week... We'll discuss Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and devote the bulk of the podcast to a look back at the year in cinema, including our Top 10 Movies of 2005.

Cinecast #68: Crime and Nihilism

I have sensual lips? You should see Sam's.

Match Point: Woody Allen's new film "Match Point" was originally set in the Hamptons on New York's Long Island. A Hitchcockian tale of a working class tennis pro caught up in a seductive world of wealth, it's easy to imagine "Match Point" taking place on the manicured lawns of 'East Egg'. But when financing fell through and the BBC rescued the film, Allen changed the location from New York to London. It's a huge change for the usually Manhattan-bound Allen, but it's a seamless fit for the class-conscious story and its shallow, impeccably attired characters.

So, is "Match Point" the best Woody Allen film in almost 20 years, or just the best in recent memory? Or is it not even the best Woody Allen film released in the last 12 months? Adam and Sam have a conversation filled with bitter acrimony as they disagree on their third film in four weeks.

Also on the show, listeners share their thoughts on "Brokeback Mountain" and prompt Sam to belt out a few bars from "West Side Story." Plus, Massacre Theatre and a preview of this week's Top 5 Cheating Hearts -- Movies About Adultery.

Music by The Randy Bandits ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Cinecast #67: A Tragic Top 5

We'll always have Cinecast #67

Hitchcock Marathon #3/Tragic Love Stories: Half-way through a six-week Master of Suspense Marathon, Adam and Sam come to a fork in the road... and take it. Rather than choose between Hitchcock's only Best Picture-winning film (Rebecca) and one of Hitch's personal favorites (Shadow of a Doubt), the boys find time for both films. Sam liked "Rebecca's" dark, perverse romance more than Adam, but both agreed that "Shadow of a Doubt" was the real gem. With its witty critique of middle class complacency, tense plotting and a killer performance by charming evil-doer Joseph Cotten, "Shadow of a Doubt" was more than worth their time.

Also on the show, Listener Voicemails and our Top 5 Tragic Love Stories.

Music courtesy of Wilder Embry ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

iTunes Problem/"Correct" Subscription

For reasons yet to be determined, we had a feed issue this morning that has caused some problems in iTunes. Basically, many of you may be noticing that only shows #49-58 are currently appearing.

Here's the situation: There are actually two "versions" of Cinecast in iTunes. The bulk of you are probably subscribed to version #1, let's call it, which was set up by Apple for the iTunes launch back in June. Here are the problems with this version:

1. Show #59 and beyond are missing (see opening paragraph)
2. Our old logo appears (notice "A weekly film podcast..."
3. Our old show description appears ("New movie reviews and insightful film talk")
4. In your iTunes Podcasts section, our show descriptions do not appear properly (html code instead of text)
5. Shows don't actually appear until roughly 6 hours after we post them.

So what do you do? Well, it's easy actually... ALL of these problems can be solved by subscribing to version #2, which you can do by:

A) Clicking here, which is the same as clicking the iTunes 1-click chicklet right next to the date at the top of this post

or

B) Open iTunes--Advanced--Subscribe to Podcast--and enter our feed, http://feeds.feedburner.com/cinecast

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for listening!

Cinecast #66: Go Tell It On The Mountain

Hey cowboy, you should listen to Cinecast #66

Brokeback Mountain: If you're tuning in to hear Adam and Sam play devil's advocate to the of heaps of praise that "Brokeback Mountain" is getting, you're going to be disappointed. Your Cinecast hosts may have found parts of the trailer unintentionally amusing, but director Ang Lee's movie -- patient, expertly observed and impeccably acted by a great ensemble cast -- is (you heard it here last) one of the best films of year. Inspiring for the choices its characters don't -- or can't -- make, "Brokeback Mountain" avoids sentimentality and melodrama to deliver a truly powerful story of ill-fated love.
Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and our Top 5 Tragic Love Stories Preview.

Music by Candi Staton ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.
