FS #279: An Education / Antichrist / Top 5 Taboo Relationships

Oct. 30: Yes, we are obviously trying to seduce you. This week, Adam and Matty decide to forgo their spot at Oxford next semester and instead fall head over heels for the much older Peter Sarsgaard's fast car, cool jazz and French cigarettes. The lads sneak out during fifth period to gossip with the girls about their love for the new Lone Scherfig film, "An Education," starring the aforementioned dreamy Mr. Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Olivia Williams and the lovely Carey Mulligan in a jaw-dropping performance.

And after a lost weekend of dissecting Camus beside the Seine, Adam and Matty head out to the countryside to further lose their innocence (and quite possibly their stomachs) at the hands of Lars von Trier and his latest rollicking cinematic parable, "Antichrist." Humbled and confused by their time spent with Mr. von Trier (and his playful anthropomorphic realizations of Grief, Chaos, and Despair -- Br'er Fox eat your heart out [literally]) -- and in light of a couple of pending lawsuits, Filmspotting has been advised by counsel not to comment on this week's Top 5 outside of giving its title: Top 5 Taboo Relationship Movies."

But Filmspotting (ahem, Matty) would like to remind the fine civil servants of Kane County, particularly the two members of the local constabulary that might have been sitting in the West Dundee Steak and Shake at 2:00 am last Friday night, that "Excuse me, miss, do you know where the high school girls hang out around here?" is a QUOTE from the movie "Swingers." Thank you, Senator, no further comment.

Also on the show: Listener Feedback, music by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Massacre Theatre -- presented by Pixar Talk. This week's winner will get the Pixar DVD of their choice.

Pains of Being Pure at Heart? Very, very hip, guys. You've done nicely with music lately--notably Dead Milkmen and Gaslight Anthem. Keep it up!

Dear Filmspotting,

Well, unless wou were joking or very full of "how great we are / we are the best / we are going to put K. Russell down / we are going to D. Quaid down / etc..."

- "I believe Rocky V never actually happened"
- "Rocky V never happened"

Well, maybe this is a zombie or my English language teacher cheated me when he taught me the verb "to happen"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100507/

Rocky V
Directed by John G. Avildsen, starring Sylvester Stallone / Talia Shire / Burt Young / Sage Stallone / Burgess Meredith

Be informed when you praise, be informed when you do not.

Oh, maybe you mean that it was soooooooooooo bad that for you it never existed in the first place. In an interview with Jonathan Ross (UK talk show host), Sylvester Stallone was asked to rate each of the Rocky movies out of 10. He gave this movie zero.

Last two suggestions:

- Next time you do a marathon, follow it week after week. What you did to Akira Kurosawa was not your best / proudest moment (the zombie marathon)
- As you wanted to ignore "Rocky V", my suggestion for your next Top 5 is "Best Series of movies that are composed of four or more films" (Star Wars? Harry Potter? Dekalog?)

Yes, that might have been what we were suggesting.

Not being able to do a Marathon movie every week is not ideal, but nobody else has complained and we will continue to work around scheduling conflicts the best we can.

What part of Matty saying that Dennis Quaid and Kurt Russell could be inducted into the Filmspotting Hall of Fame of actors seemed like a joke? At no point were we putting them down... other than perhaps my comment specifically about Great Balls of Fire, which I maintain is not Quaid's finest hour.

hey guys, you got a hell of a show goin' on. I have to say that it helps having 2 people doing the podcast than only 1 peron. most of them only have 1 person and they're pretty boring.

I'm living in spain right now and i got to see antichrist before you.I saw it with a friend and he neither liked it nor understood it. I actually liked it, because it's not the typical movie where you know whats gonna happen and you have to be really open minded to understand the metaphores, of the scenes. some compare it with the gore films. free blood, and free violence. but unlike these movies the images don't only impact you but you have to try to see a little bit further.

i've also seen HTE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASUS, which will be released by christmas in the states. i'm not gonna say anything about it so you won't feel influenced by my opinion, but i gotta say, it's visually beautiful, and it's has a good story, but terry gilliam had to be smokin' something while filming it.
good luck with your show guys

Dear Adam,

Thank you for your very quick and kind answer!

Ok for Rocky V. I shall try to take you not as literally the next time.

On Marathons, I agree that an irregularly scheduled marathon (while not desired) is better than no marathon at all. I had the feeling of being in a movie theater watching a movie which was interrupted continuously.

A solution could be to have a guest host / listener covering one of the films and taping him / her, so this could take some of the pressure off (you can put his part on the week you feel you will not be able to do the Marathon work). What do you think?

As for the D.Quaid / K.Russell pantheon, there are hints of laughs when Matty suggests the #1/#2 pantheon / "You disappoint me sometimes" / "Maybe so, maybe so" (which seemed to suggest "Yeah, let's put these two could-have-been-great-stars-but-never-were-and-were-they-good-actors-to-start-with? up there", all being tongue in cheek). Again, I could have misunderstood you.

On DQ on "GBOF", I liked it better when I saw it when it came but nowadays I would agree with you (he treats JLL as a joke during half of his performance).

Thank you again! Keep on the good work!

Just wanted to tell you how much I love the show.
Thanks to your recommendations I will watch "An education" and I'll pass "The Antichrist".
Finally Rocky V is the best Rocky movie ever. I don't know why you fail to appreciate the genius of the script and the great cast: Stallone's portrayal of an out of luck former superstar boxer is heartbreaking as it is his interaction with his son...
I am joking that movie is crap.
Keep on the good work.

I used to really enjoy listening to you guys, but I am less and less. First I want to say that you two choose great films and have great taste. It's great to hear reviews of films like Badlands instead of just whatever blockbuster is making the most money.

However, I can't handle Matty's dramatic preaching that occurs on most episodes. Please just stick to film. Also, the self-congratulation and constant mention of the fact that you, in fact, have a film show on NPR and that you taught a class at U of Chicago makes you sound rather amateur.

Not trying to hate, just being honest. Hope you don't take it the wrong way.

What's the right way to take it? :)

We're not congratulating ourselves for teaching a class... we're providing context. Since we are on the radio and have new people turning the dial over all the time, in addition to new podcast listeners, you can't expect listeners to know every little detail. If there's a valid reason to bring it up, we don't want listeners to be lost because we're talking only to the people who listen to every single show.

There's really no such thing as "sticking to film" either. Or at least there shouldn't be. Movies aren't about other movies and shouldn't be viewed through such a closed lens. Your entire background and perspective should go into a review. The listener can decide whether they find it valid or not. If you don't like Matty's perspective, that's fine.
