FS #245: Coraline / This Sporting Life / 2009 Oscar Picks

Feb. 13
There once was a boy
Who listened to Filmspotting
For all of his movie reviews
But then one day he tired of their games
And yelled, "Come on guys, get a clue!"

But Adam and Matty -- not to be crossed
Came in the still of the night
Next day his parents searched high and low
Of the boy could be found not a sight!

Yet on the wind it is said if you listen just so,
You can hear a boy whisp'ring: "Matty's right!"

This week the guys don their best Vincent Price and Eartha Kitt voices to dissect the creepy new stop-motion animated film from director Henry Selick, "Coraline." Then, Richard Harris joins the ranks of Albert Finney and Richard Burton in the calvacade of great performances reviewed in the Filmspotting Angry Young Men Marathon. Harris stars as a disaffected rugby player in Lindsay Anderson's "This Sporting Life."

Plus, denied entry into the Shrine Auditorium and not wanting their rented purple velour tuxedoes to go to waste, Adam and Matty hold their own version of the Academy Awards in a nearby Jack-in-the-Box parking lot and predict who will and who should win the 2009 Oscars.

Also on the show: Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and music by Tindersticks... Download from iTunes here.

So Tindersticks is a pretty inspired music choice, but I'm wondering if either one of you have seen Claire Denis' "Trouble Every Day," or more specifically if you've heard that film's soundtrack. I'm positive Adam hasn't seen 'Trouble' since it got (mostly) deservedly bad reviews and it's about people that devour each other's flesh during sex (yeah, not Denis' best). Anyway, the Tindersticks soundtrack is brilliant, so if one or both of you are a fan, be sure to check that one out.

can you do a Top 5 List "Outstanding Contributions to Cinematic Rubbish"? I really loved Penelope Cruz last year (even better in "Elegy"), but "Vicky, Christina, Barcelona"??? What a pathetic collection of old man's jokes and wet dreams about Europe. I found this such an insult that I almost walked out. Bah! Still upset... but Penelope...hm, yes, my new Gina Lollobrigida!
