FS #243: Waltz With Bashir / Saturday Night and Sunday Morning / Top 5 Movies About Hope & Change

Jan. 30: This week, in anticipation of the upcoming Academy Awards, Filmspotting takes a look director at Ari Folman's Oscar-nominated "Waltz With Bashir" (Best Foreign Language Film, Israel). Adam and Matty agree the film offers a very personal, dissociative look at the Lebanon War of 1982, but the guys disagree on the animated 'documentary's' overall effectiveness at evoking the memories of the men who experienced the horrors of combat. Then the lads grab a pint and take part in some terrible decision-making with Albert Finney in "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning," the second entry in Filmspotting's Angry Young Men Marathon. But to insure the show is not all doom and gloom this week, the boys close out on a high note with their Top 5 Movies About Hope and Change: "Filmspotting, movie reviews you can moderately believe in!"

Also on the show: Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and music by Animal Collective (iTunes 1-click).

NOTES/CORRECTIONS
- "The Dark Knight" has been added as a poll option.

- Next week's "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is another Tony Richardson film, not Lindsay Anderson.

- Czech Republic would have been Czechoslovakia when director Karel Reisz came to the UK.

- Matty suggested contacting your local public radio station about playing Filmspotting. Mention that we can be found on PRX (Public Radio Exchange).

- Ignore everything said about "The Class" at the end of the show. We aren't reviewing it until Feb. 13 (opens the 6th). Next show actually looks like it will be "Taken" right now.

don't know how it's decided what music gets featured on your 'cast, but thanks for having my favorite band this week. maybe could've done a little better with song selection (e.g., "my girls" and/or "brother sport"), but your giving some FS love to AC is much appreciated all the same.

and WALL•E for BP is the biggest snub. animateds are movies, too.

Thanks for reading my email, guys. And Matty is right, it's "Cure-uh-sow", like the liquor.
