FS #215: Get Smart / Overlooked DVDs / '70s Sci-Fi Awards / Top 5 Actor-Director Duos

June 20: Eschewing the trend adopted by seemingly every other media outlet this week, Filmspotting steadfastly refuses to incorporate the phrase "Missed It By That Much" during its brief review of "Get Smart," the action-comedy starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Terrence Stamp and Alan Arkin. In fact, the boys practically refuse to discuss "Get Smart" at all, opting instead to bring you some Overlooked DVD Picks.

It seems like only yesterday Adam and Matty were first treated to the post-apocalyptic beads of He-man sweat dangling from the bronzed barreled chest of Chuck Heston in "The Omega Man." Time really flies when you're living in zombie/drone/space-ebola/Bruce Dern-filled dystopias. The lads honor the best of their recently wrapped '70s Sci-Fi Marathon by meting out the coveted Damn Dirty Ape Awards.

And ... apropos of absolutely nothing ... Filmspotting rolls out its Top 5 Actor/Director Duos. That's just the way we roll.

Also on the show: Matty's Movie Minute, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and music by Biirdie.

Wow. I can't believe you spent more time talking about The Happening than Get Smart. At least Steve Carell was actually trying to get the laughs. I had a lot of fun with this one, and sure there were some clunky moments, it didn't deserve the complete turned-up nose that should have went to M. Night's latest "effort". Stop sipping so much hateraid, boys. -Rob from NY

Um, did you mess our full segment devoted to shredding The Happening the previous week?

That's what I meant...

All that aside, looking forward to the heist marathon. Watching Rafifi at the moment, makes me feel kind of silly defending Get Smart. :) /I am definitely enjoying this marathon more than 70's Sci Fi.

I think that was his point; that you spent more time last week on The Happening than you did this week on Get Smart. Personally, I see why you did it the way you did. It's much more fun spending time slamming crappy movies than it is trying to get anything interesting out of a discussion on "bleh" movies.

After the total mess that was *You Don't Mess with the Zohan*, *Get Smart* was a big relief for me and my group of movie-going friends. I agree with your comments about the flat scenes back at Control HQ, but we all felt that Carell and Hathaway were great together, and the sharpest moments made it well worth our time. Not a great film, but--hey--it's based on an old TV show. Plus: cameos by all three of Max's cars! Car guy geek-out!
