FS #208: Iron Man / The Omega Man / Top 5 Box Office Bombs (That We Like)

May 2: This week... What is this Iron Man? A small arthouse documentary on the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath? The long awaited Cal Ripken biopic? No, director Jon Favreau treats Adam and Matty to their first taste of a summer popcorn movie with his adaptation of the popular Marvel comic starring Robert Downey, Jr. as playboy-turned-superhero Tony Stark. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges co-star. The original man of iron -- Charlton Heston -- stars in "The Omega Man," the opening entry in Filmspotting's '70s Sci-Fi Marathon. Plus, "Paging Mr. Costner!" In honor of the onset of blockbuster season (emphasis on the BUST), Filmspotting shares the Top 5 Box Office Bombs (That We Like).

Also on the show: Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, music by Fever Marlene and Matty's Movie Minute reviews "Baby Mama" (sort of).

95% on Rotten Tomatoes and you two film snobs hated this movie? Who died and made you experts on what makes a good movie? Get a grip, guys, this is a summer blockbuster, not Sophie's Choice or Black Snake Moan. Treat it as such, and don't treat it as if it's gunning for an Oscar.

No offense, Mike... but A) Who cares what other critics said on Rotten Tomatoes? B) No idea how you took away that we hated this movie. I certainly didn't. Matty's giving it 3 stars out of 5. I'm giving it 3.5 with a lean toward 4.

Who died and made anyone an expert on what makes a good movie?

I watched Howard the Duck so many times when I was kid and I loved it. When I grew up, I was surprised to find out how many people didn't like it. I wish it was on DVD.

To answer your question, Adam...

I believe when Orson Wells died, his last words were, "Make M. Robert Turnage an expert on what makes a good movie."

(Tags: don't like to be a pedant, but does Jon Favreau's surname end in a Y?)

I think being called a 'film snob' is a compliment :)
I recall the wisdom of Brian Eno:

"I decided to turn the word ‘pretentious’ into a compliment."

Miami Vice made 63 million in the USA, almost half the budget. Still pretty bad considering the studio only takes home about half of that.

I've seen Iron Man 3 times now, and I have to say, I didn't get your criticisms at all. I definitely think Adam was more objective than Matty, but "who was the enemy?" Are you serious? They mentioned the Ten Rings at least twice, with some weighty dialogue with Yinsin near the beginning how they speak a ton of languages at the compound. At any rate, differing viewpoints aside, it was obvious that Matty was fully prepared to hate this film going in. Favs has done an incredible thing here, since I was NOT prepared to have Spider-man 2 and Batman Begins knocked off my "best superhero movie ever" top spots.

Yea I really don't think Matt approached this with an open mind either. They are the 10 rings which is an allusion to The Mandarin who is often though of as Iron Man's #1 villain. I'm assuming he will be in the sequel. The character of Tony Stark isn't really a superhero. There are no tights. He's a conflicted man who's been through heavy trauma. So he's trying things out. Along the way, he exacts payback to the people who captured him and defends himself in a corporate and physical takeover. Downey Jr. is great and I never like Paltrow and thought she was charming here. I'll agree Howard was given very little to do. But there were no groaners in the dialogue. I don't know what else you expected. Like adam said, the alcoholism, the 10 rings, that will be in the sequel. It's what happens when you adapt a sequential story to movies. The 94-95% on rottentomatoes WAS significant. It was the highest rated comic book movie ever.
