Filmspotting #129: The Departed / The Science of Sleep / Top 5 Coolest Characters

The Science of Deception: If the 2002 Hong Kong thriller "Infernal Affairs" was a song and you had to pick a director to cover that song, you would probably pick Martin Scorsese. Gangs, guns, grisly violence, macho banter and "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones... "The Departed" proudly bears the distinctive Scorsese stamp. The film also showcases the most impressive cast this side of "All The King's Men," which, as we know, doesn't mean anything at all. Adam and Sam debate the merits of Scorsese's narrative ambition and give at least one Hollywood legend some bad news. (WARNING: 'Potential' Ending Spoilers from 20:00-20:42)

Also on the show: a review of Michel Gondry's "The Science of Sleep." One of your hosts calls it his favorite movie of the year; the other spends the rest of the segment trying to convince everyone that the critically adored "Half Nelson" is wildly overrated.

Plus, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and this week's Top 5: Coolest Characters or If I Could Be One Character in the History of Film, I Would Be...

Music by The Arcade Fire from the album "Funeral" courtesy of Merge Records.

Hi guys,

great review as usual. I can't wait to see the Departed! Did you guys know that its actually got elements of Infernal Affairs 1, 2 & 3? Just thought I'd let u know in case you haven't seen the other sequels (well more a prequel and a sequel). They're all interesting movies that finish off the story in the third.

great work guys. keep it up

WOW! I haven't even listened to the show yet, but the fact that you managed to get one of my favourite bands on there (not personally, but still, great music) makes sure that this will be one of my favourite episodes! It's so awesome that you find new great artists to play and you have turned me on to several. Thanks!

Sam, your "Elizabeth Shue mistake" is somewhat forgivable. As she actually plays Marty's girlfriend in Back the Future II and III. She's not in the first one though, but that might have been what flubbed you. Completely forgiven, and this is coming from a hardcore fan of the franchise.

Great add-on. I was in first grade when Back to the Future I came out and it was my first exposure to a live action filmas well as to the phrase, "holy shit". The next morning I stomped through the school playground and quoted just that word over and over to my friends. Not any particular line, just holy shit. I was put in the corner and i didn't even know what it meant yet.

alas, you helped send me to my movie nostalgiac core once again.

Great show guys. Two short comments:

Your remarks re: 'The Departed'-right on the money. Decent, not classic Scorsese.

Sam's review of 'Science of Sleep'-definitely right on the money!! I think it's the strongest films so far this year.

I'm going to be watching both of the movies this weekend, so I'll comment on those later.

I just want to let everyone know how glad I am that you picked The Arcade Fire this time. I usually love most of the music you play during the segment-switching, but I can't believe that you managed to score a band more mainstream (but still very, very "indie" in the actual world) than you usually play. Good on you then!
