Filmspotting #112: Superman Returns / Top 5 Movie Scores

When director Bryan Singer left the X-Men franchise to make "Superman Returns," movie fans had two big questions: "What's going to happen to the X-Men?" and "Is Singer the right man to resurrect the Man of Steel?" We got an answer to the first question earlier this summer with Brett Ratner's uninspired but mostly entertaining "X-Men 3: The Last Stand." As for the second question ... Singer has probably been called a lot of names in his life, but has he ever been called "Brett Ratner"? One of your jaded, unsentimental Filmspotting hosts dares to blaspheme at the altar of Singer, while the other humbly kneels before him. That's right, Adam and Sam disagree! Again!
Also on the show: Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, the final film in our Herzog-Kinski Marathon -- "My Best Fiend" -- and our Top 5 Movie Scores. Thanks to Chicago Public Radio general manager and cinema score expert Torey Malatia for contributing to this week's top 5.
Correction: Chris from the Studio Upstairs correctly wrote 'Roy Cohn' in his James Woods-Character Actors email ... Adam, in his haste, said 'Ray Cohn'.

Not sure what happened... but the first time iTunes d/l'd this episode, I noticed that it totaled at around 17mins.
Knowing that there was no way that Sam and Adam could do an episode that short (unless the recording was sped up 5x), I downloaded again and this time got the full episode.
just returned from my honeymoon in Mexico and dang -- i got some Filmspottin' to do! Especially this Lake House review I continue to hear about.
Also, yes - a trailer addition to your show would be great. I find myself critiquing trailers and even feeling like i've already seen the films after only seeing particular trailers at nausea. (i.e. "Click")
keep it up the great work.
Hey guys, great show as always...I actually agree with both Sam and Adam as I have mixed feelings about Superman. After thinking about it i realised that it is so hard to make a Superman movie in this modern age. Its such an optimistic and wholesome character in this cynical world. I actually showed my girlfriend the original Richard Donner film and she HATED it which annoyed me, but I can't but admit that the movie doesn' hold up in many ways and does get very cheesy.
But nevertheless, I enjoyed the film for its epic quality and some scenes really gave me goosebumps. I think Adam's comments about Bryan Singer was unfair. I think if Ratner Superman Returns it would be a train wreck.
Keep up the good work.
Sam is clearly insane. Superman was one of the most boring movies I have seen in a long time. And I willpay a tidy sum to anyone who can explain why superman can carry and entire continent made of kryptonite. Also, he sure has some magic glasses, they really so alter his apperance. This is movie for people who have never seen another movie.
I thought it was pretty clear that superman uses his heat vision to drill down far enough under the kryptonite to insulate himself with the earth. So he basically has to lift twice the amount of material. As the kryptonite island grows closer, he gets weaker.
That's a negative on drilling down further than the Kryptonite. You actually see it glowing around him as he's lifting that thing into space. Though I admit all I was seeing was red because of the anger and dissapointment I was feeling at the movie.
This was the most boring movie I've seen in quite awhile. 2 1/2 hours that seemed twice as long. Even with the drilling down twice as deep idea doesn't explain why he strains to stop the plane in the beginning. That's sort of a problem inherent in a character who has no limits to his power.
Superman is an old fashioned hero who is purely good which can be cheesey; but it would have been interesting to see a purely good godlike entity having to deal with cynical humans. Making him act in a cynical way, trying to break up Lois's engagement is understandable but not purely good. Him following Lois borders on the creepy at times.
Lex would have worked better if they used the “Lex Luthor: Man of Steel” storyline. In that storyline Lex sees himself as a virtuous man who has to do harm to others to meet his ends. He sees himself as a self made man, a billionaire industrialist with vast intelligence that often deals with criminals to accomplish larger goals. He thinks everyone can achieve greatness if they tried hard enough but Superman is a roadblock to the evolution of humanity. Why work hard if the flying savior in tights will solve your problems. He has Superman because his powers are innate he doesn’t have to do anything to get them. In short he is John Galt as a psychopath.
The whole "twist" that's all too predictable ignores Larry Niven's “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex." Ignoring the whole mind wipe deal from Superman II after Lois' night with Superman becuase of the huge plot whole that leaves, you're still left with "Ill be around." In any other movie when a guy says that fter this kind of revelation people would want a scarlet letter on his chest but it begins with an A.
There are too many problems with this movie to mention. I'll just say this is a nostalgia flick that goes so far as to use whole swaths of dialogue from the Donner movies. If you loved SUperman I & II and wanted to see them with better special effects Bryan Singer gave ytou you're wish more or less. I saw it with my brother and his kids. The kids were depressed and my brother and I were angry, we got free tickets but you can't get back 2 1/2 hours of your life. Even with all of it's problems of explaining everything "Batman Begins" was a better movie.
