Filmspotting #104: The Break-Up / Top 5 'Chick' Flicks Preview

Judging by the trailer, "Bring It On" director Peyton Reed's latest film "The Break-Up" seems pretty conventional fare: boy (Vince Vaughn) meets girl (Jennifer Aniston) ... contrived forces dictated by nearly a century of romantic comedies keep them apart ... boy and girl fall (back) in love and live happily ever after. As it turns out, better to trust the title of the movie than the trailer. A romantic comedy in structure, but the 'anti-romantic comedy' in almost every other way, Reed's film surprises by being equal parts comedy and drama, choosing not to avoid any of the messy stuff inherent in a difficult break-up. It's a pretty bold choice that surely risks turning off some members of its target audience. But does it work? With the aid of their patented CineGoggles, Adam and Sam buck the critical trend and give "The Break-Up" a hearty recommendation.

Hey guys,
glad to hear that you enjoyed The Break Up. One thing I don't recall you guys mentioning (due to lack of time I'm guessing) was the return of the Vince Vaughn/Jon Favreau duo. The thing I found most interesting about it was how they seemed to have switch roles compared to their parts in Swingers with Vaughn being the guy having the woman troubles and Favreau being the know it all buddy. The final scene with them in the bar and Favreau telling Vaughn to make sure to make a few phone calls between 10-11 had to be one of the funniest scenes I've seen all year (at least until Ricky Bobby comes out). As always keep up the great work.

great point - they really did have a nuanced role-reversal. I honestly laughed ridiculously hard during the film. Comparably to the experience of Wedding Crashers, so perhaps I was in a really good theater with the crowd really going there. I'm really not sure why the movie is turning critics off so much. I would have the audiences would complain more about the movie being an anti-romantic com while the critics would be praising the effort.
bizarre.
