Cinecast #98: United 93

Inevitable, and yet still unimaginable for many Americans, "United 93" hits theaters as the first Hollywood film to deal explicitly with the events that took place on September 11, 2001. Written and directed by Paul Greengrass ("Bloody Sunday," "The Bourne Supremacy"), the film depicts, in real time, the agonizing sequence of events preceding the decision by a group of the flight's passengers to attack their hijackers, forcing the plane to crash short of its target in Washington, D.C. With equal parts urgency and restraint, Greengrass' film plays like a thriller, while showing the utmost respect for the flight's heroic victims. Adam and Sam agree that "United 93" is powerful and intelligent filmmaking, but disagree about whether Greengrass has made a truly great film.

In case you're wondering what happened to our Top 5 Heroes list, after some last-minute consideration we decided to postpone it in favor of something that seemed more appropriate in connection with "United 93." Hence, films we admire ... that we might never watch again, a list we originally assembled for Cinecast #11. It somehow didn't seem right to talk about the "heroism" of Indiana Jones on the same show featuring a discussion of the real-life heroes of flight 93.

Spud and Rents (I'll let you decide who's who),
Filmspotting is great. Now the name of "The Dope Sheet" suddenly makes a lot more sense!
Live from the seedy underbelly of Edinburgh, this is...
-Phil from Scotland.
spotting - outbreak of secondary fires as firebrands or other burning materials are carried ahead of the main fire line by winds.
spotting - Retouching of a photographic print using a brush with watercolors or dyes, or a pencil, to get rid of blemishes caused by dust or scratches on a negative.
spotting - Light bleeding at anytime except menstruation.
At least 2 of them sound very relevant! Love the name... seriously!
Jake
Filmspotting... You know, I was bummed about the name change until I heard you guys were changing it to this. What a great pick!
I'll take Wicket's comment one step further (actually, in a different direction)...
film - A thin covering or coating
spotting - Light bleeding at anytime except menstruation.
enough said?
please change the name
Always has to be one killjoy in the room, huh?
Name is set in stone, sorry.
Have you ever tried to compose and record a song while whispering into a microphone, half drunk at 2:30 in the morning while trying not to wake up your wife in the next room? Well I have! Thanks for playing the song guys. And, I just gotta say, whether or not she should be, my wife is very proud. “Film Spotting”... it may not roll off the tongue effortlessly, but dammit... now you wont get sued! Thanks for doing what had to be done.
But just think, fellow listeners! Five years from now we'll all be able too say that WE were in to 'Film Spotting' back when it was still 'Cinecast'... back when it was still about the MOVIES, man! Listen to me now, my fellow Cine-Crackers! We must cherish these “simpler” times, because soon we'll all begin to look down our noses at the newcomers, the Johnny-come-lately’s… the “Spotters” as they will come to called.
Soon, as all true fans do, we will begin to resent Adam and Sam for their new found commercial success, and we’ll claim they’ve “really sold out”, and that the “fame has obviously gone to their heads.”
“What ever happened to artistic integrity?”, we’ll scream! Soon, they’ll be selling “Adam K” bobble-heads at Sun Coast, and “I’m A Sam Man” onesies at the Baby Gap... and truly, many tears will fall. The name Cinecast will be but a faint memory… just a footnote, an asterisk in the “50 years of Film Spotting” coffee table book.
I implore you all to remember the days like today, “the Salad days” we’ll call them… and someday we’ll tell our grandkids about a time long ago… a time that for one bright shining moment, we felt that life was worth living, that movies were worth watching, and that there was more to life than the almighty dollar. There was, indeed, a little thing called Cinecast… and that my friends, was all we needed.
[Curtain]
You're makin' me cry man! That was beautiful.
