Cinecast #85: Night Watch

Night Watch: Ever wonder what would happen if you took a half dozen of the biggest blockbusters from the last 30 years, added a liter of vodka and tossed it into a blender? If Adam and Sam had thought of it sooner, they would now be the most successful filmmakers in the history of Russian cinema. Night Watch, the new Russian import that's equal parts "Matrix," "Star Wars," "Lord of the Rings" and "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," among others, broke box office records in its native country and is just getting a subtitled release here in the States. Striking an impressive balance between originality and homage, "Night Watch" turned out to be a real surprise for Adam and Sam. Exactly what kind of surprise? Tune in to find out.

Wow...what are you up so early for?
One of the great things about "Night Watch" is the strong sense of place and the sheer grubbiness of it all. You think of movies like "Underworld" or "The Matrix" or even the "Harry Potter" movies where someone is chosen or special and is brought into a greater world where they wear leather outfits, know kung fu, and fight dragons.
The characters in "Night Watch" are revealed as Others and brought into a greater world where they get to be... sanitation engineers.
The guy that wrote that he was embarrassed to refer to the show as "Cinaddiction" doesn't come off as a good argument against the show. He comes off as a momma's boy who can't form an adult relationship with his mother.
Seriously, does he talk to his mom about the podcast while he waits for her to make him his afternoon chocolate milk?
My, Derik, that certainly was a thoughtful and insightful response. Surely this is the best way to argue in favor of a new name for the show...
You gotta admit, it's kind of funny... then again, I wish my mom made me chocolate milk in the afternoon.
Derik-
Hahaha! I used my mom as an example, because I know that she would not respond well if I told her that a podcast I listen to called 'Cinediction' recommended a certain movie. I don't think it has anything to do with forming an 'adult relationship' - I just know because of her morals and personality she wouldn't react well.
But really, maybe a better example would be saying the name in a corporate environment. I wouldn't want my boss overhearing part of a conversation about something called Cinediction without knowing what it is. Then again, maybe it would get people curious about the show! ;)
Now, where did I put my chocolate milk?
how about - CineMen.
Sounds like cinnamon and is very chic and uh... well. no. i don't think that would, hmm, no. but it has a nice ring to-uh.. hm.. yeah i'll just stop talking.
All right, my day is complete. We finally have the official trailer for Snakes on a Plane! This will definitely be the best movie of 2006.
Cinediction guys. Cinediction.
And I do I detect that I'm the lone soul who thinks 'Snakes on a Plane' looks awful. You can't intentionally go in with the intention of making a 'camp classic'. It just sorta happens, ya know?
