Cinecast #83: 16 Blocks/Oscars Postmortem

I gotta stop and download Cinecast #83 before I take you to court, is that cool?

16 Blocks: Even the most optimistic movie lover will be quick to admit that the first couple of months in any year are not the greatest. The slow trickle of Oscar eligible films just about stops completely by late February, and then it's time to face the music, get back into the cinemas and take what's coming to you. Adam and Sam held out as long as they could, but got their first taste of Hollywood's big budget '06 offerings with veteran director Richard Donner's corrupt cop thriller "16 Blocks."

Boasting a promising, if not entirely original, plot and some reliable talent, Donner's film could have been harmless fun. But despite strong work from star Bruce Willis and the under-appreciated David Morse, co-star Mos Def makes an ill-advised acting choice that just about submarines the entire production.

Also on the show, listeners vent about last weekend's Academy Awards, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5... Cop Movies.

Music by The Stepford Five courtesy of Reverbose Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Cinecast is brought to you by Peerflix. Trade DVDs online at peerflix.com/cinecast.

And also by 'Big Love' from HBO, a bold new dramatic series that explores the complicated life of a modern day polygamist. Big Love. Polygamy loves company. Premieres this Sunday March 12th at 10 P-M/9 Central, immediately following 'The Sopranos,' only on HBO.

Sometimes it's good to use a name that somehow makes use of food. People like food references-- they can be comforting and they make your show sound delicious. So here's a few suggestions with that in mind:

Cinema Breakfast -- Cinema Breakfast is part of your complete breakfast. Just the name puts me in mind of those old Honey Nut Cheerios commercials; right now I'm envisioning a bright and cheery bowl of Cinema Breakfast surrounded by glasses of milk and orange juice and a couple slices of toast.

Cinema Flambe -- Although some might be tempted to call it "Cinema Flame Bay" in light of Michael Bay's film The Island, I submit that this is a more easily digestible and lighthearted version of the previously considered name Burn Hollywood Burn.

Cinema Thermadore Smothered In A Light Cream Sauce With A Side Of Spam -- I searched Google and I don't think anyone has taken this name yet.

Yet another name suggestion:

The Cinema Science Monitor (CSM, for short).

I like Cinediction because it's rings of both "addiction" and "benediction," which very accurately describes my feelings towards film. It also has "diction" in it, which this podcast tends to excel at.

Or you could go with Cinemadiction.

Thanks... though if you do a Google search for Cinemaddiction (with two d's), you'll find too many references to it to make it an option.

Of course you could start reviewing music as well as movies and call your show the "Cinebottom Nightmare Band."

'The Cinema Show' was already a recent movie review show on BBC4:

Guys, I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT USE CINEDICTION! I often tell people at work about what you guys are talking about on the show. My mom (who doesn't listen to any podcasts) knows your show by name because I have mentioned your reviews to my family a bunch of times.

You want me to tell my mom that Sin Addiction says that you should really see such-and-such movie? Uhh..

You would be setting yourself up for loss of a larger potential audience. All other names in the 2 polls so far are better.

How about "Cine-bon"? That one should be 100% trademark safe.
