Cinecast #79: Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story

Tristram Shandy: Want to avoid the inevitable criticism that your movie adaptation doesn't hold a candle to the book it's based on? Choose an obscure 18th century novel -- widely regarded as "unfilmable" -- that most people haven't heard of, never mind actually read. That's what director Michael Winterbottom did with his adaptation of Laurence Sterne's comic novel "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" -- ranked 8th on the list of the world's greatest novels ... chronologically. Adam and Sam agree that "Tristram Shandy" fulfills the basic criterion for any successful comedy (i.e. it's really funny), but disagree slightly on whether it succeeds entirely at anything else. Indisputably clear is the comic genius of star Steve Coogan and co-star Rob Brydon.

I'm really interested in this film and have been lobbying my local art-house theatre to pick it up. Quick question: Is there a lot of raunchy humor in this film? This sounds like the sort of film my mom would love to see, and I'd like to take her to see it, provided I won't be embarassed for having done so.
I can't recall anything raunchy. You should be safe.
I'm surprised to see some people are doubting Scorsese's ability to adapt "Infernal Affairs". I also saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and while it was an enjoyable film, it's hardly something that I would consider to be sacred. I think it actually kind of hurt my viewing of the origional in that while watching, all I could think about was how would Scorsese handle this.
I really appreciated the Spanish 101, it was a segment very well performed, and made me laugh a lot. Thanks for putting it in the show!

while I'd have to agree that there wasn't really any "raunchy" humor, there was Some sexual content that may offend those that take offense at that sort of thing. there's also some language to watch out for. I wouldn't take my Kids to see it, but it's not terribly offensive for an adult.
P.S.; the movie was great. Best I've seen this year. Not that that's Saying much.
