Cinecast #77: Transamerica

Brooding will only turn you bitter ... like Sam in Cinecast #77.

Transamerica: Sharing elements from such disparate sources as unflinching, issue-driven art house films and road trip comedies, writer/director Duncan Tucker's "Transamerica" is a strange marriage of genres. The movie has been getting a lot of attention for its Oscar-nominated star Felicity Huffman, and Adam and Sam agree that Huffman is very good as the transgendered Bree. The movie itself, however, provokes another bitter battle. Is "Transamerica" a flawed but enjoyable and funny film that treats its subject matter with respect? Or is it a film so cliche-ridden that it potentially qualifies for "so bad it's good" status? Listen and find out...

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and a preview of this week's Top 5 ... Road Movies.

Music by Aberdeen City ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

haha- yes! I love that after your review of 'Transamerica', your Peerflix ad integrated 'Boys Don't Cry' and 'The Crying Game' seconds afterward. Very clever guys, very clever.

What a shame, Cinecast was such a perfect name. Are you guys not able to talk about the legal reasons behind the name change? The Cinema Show sounds a bit generic, but I can't come up with anything better. As long as the show itself doesn't change, I think I'll be okay =P.

Noooo!!!! I really don't like the new name... Why not call it CineCrack? That would be so funny and its catchy! Hell, "The Adam and Sam Movie Hour" sounds better than Cinema Show.

Love the show anyway!

haha, actually calling it Cinicrack would be so appropriate and hilarious. It's all about our love if not obsession with cinema. Man, the more i talk about it the more i like it.

I'll probably just keep calling it "Samandadam," like I always do.

You should make that your next online poll question. Honestly, if I'm telling my friends about the show, I really want to be able to say "its called CineCrack!"

Of course we considered it... and I like it too. But one fear is that if we ever hope to keep a sponsor or get a new sponsor, they might be a little turned off by a show called Cinecrack (or CineCrack)

That's understandable... I sat down for an hour trying to think of a better name and this is what I came up with:

CinePod (Then we could call it "CinePot")
You could combine your names and call it "The Sadam Show"
Or, my fiance's suggestions, "GeekCast" or "CineGeeks"

Thats all I could think of! Or could you legally change it to "Sam and Adam's Cinecast" and still call it "Cinecast" for short?

Jake

I'm glad your wife thinks so highly of us!

Unfortunately, legally, Sam and Adam's Cinecast still wouldn't work...

I think the geek suggestions were more of a shot at me. I probably talk about the show too much.

How about "CineFlix"? I guess it's sort of redundent, but it rolls off the tongue nicely. "PodFlix"? "Silver Screen Pod Cast"? "PodCasting with Adam and Sam"? What about mixing up the names of movies you both like? "Punch-Drunk-Movies"? "Citizen Kast"? Ok, those were bad jokes... Why not just "CineShow"? Its a step above "Cinema Show" at least.

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually like Punch Drunk Movies quite a bit. CineShow doesn't work because there is already a CineShow.com and we don't want to head down that slope. Believe me, if it was an "obvious" choice, we probably considered it.

See Adam, you left the window "1%" open by saying you were "99% sure" you would stick with "The Cinema Show" - so we all get to pitch in. Cinecast contest perhaps? Name the show?

Anway, sounds like lots of the fans aren't thrilled with the new name - though I imagine if you two stuck with it, we would get used to it.

...but since everybody is chipping in, here's my pitch:

- The Moviegoers -

In all honesty, the feedback so far has been pretty well split between like and dislike. Nobody is happy about it, but people can live with it.

how about "The Cinemagic Podcast?"

I too don't really mind The Cinema Show, but I'm sure you agree that it's completely generic. With that in mind, I'd like to vote on the suggestion, "The Moviegoers", a very fitting and catchy name.

It contains the simplicity ("The Moviegoers, that sound interesting...", rather than, "CineCast, what on earth is that??" And what does it even mean?"), and it definitely rolls right off the tongue. Better yet, CineCast's alliteration of the 'C' makes it sound slice-y, but The Moviegoers has a much softer tone to it.

And that's why 'The Moviegoers' is a great choice.

Instead of titling it after movies you love, how about movies you hate:

Must Love Movies
The (Movie) Interpreters
Movie Point
The Podcaster's Guide to the Movies

.....sorry, I have a test tomorrow and I found coming up with these titles far more interesting.

The Podcaster's Guide to the Movies? A bit too long, but definitely the best suggestion along with The Moviegoers.

Well, Adam and Sam?

At 9:51 AM, February 18, 2006, Adam said...

I kind of like both of them... but Podcaster's Guide is a) too long and b) seems kind of limiting. The Moviegoers just sounds too laid back maybe.
