Cinecast #70: Best/Worst of 2005 (Part I)

Those Cinecast twits better recognize this movie and how great we are in it.

Best/Worst of 2005 (Part I): Since its debut last March, Cinecast has spent roughly 200 hours at the movies. For this special 2005 Year in Review episode, Adam and Sam tried to distill all that cinematic input into an hour-long conversation ... and failed miserably. Your windbag hosts managed to talk long past the average length of a feature-length movie, so we decided -- at the last minute, naturally -- to split the show into two parts. Part II featuring Masscare Theatre and our Top 5 Movies of 2005 will be posted Friday.

In this installment, hear the first half of Cinecast's Best Movies of 2005, plus our picks for the Worst of 2005, the biggest Breakthroughs, Surprises and Cameos. Also, a quick look at "Vertigo" -- the 5th film in our six-week Hitchcock Marathon. We'll close out the Hitch Marathon next week with "Frenzy."

Music by Jude from the album "No One Is Really Beautiful" ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

I have been sitting here at work refreshing my 'Sage' Firefox RSS-reader pluggin every half-hour or so waiting for it to tell me there's a new Cinecast so I can hear your top 10.

Then fiiiinally it arrives and I have to wait until tomorrow to get the 1-5 of the list!

But it will be great tommorrow when I have more new Cinecast to listen to :)

Oh man, come on, just put the 2nd half up, it's already in the can, what's the difference if it goes up now or tomorrow.

Wow, I just sounded like a junkie.

I'm at work til 8pm EST. I'd love to hear it NOW.

I'll take a guess in the meantime:

Adam's:

5. Hustle and Flow
4. Matchpoint
3. Brokeback Mountain
2. History of Violence
and you already mentioned Star Wars for #1.

Sam's:

5. 40 Year Old Virgin or Grizzly Man (sorry, cheated)
4. Brokeback Mountain
3. Capote
2. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
1. History of Violence

How'd I do?

Mine:

7. Palindromes
6. Serenity
5. 40 Year Old Virgin
4. Grizzly Man
3. Junebug
2. Hustle & Flow
1. History of Violence

I haven't seen Capote or Brokeback

It's in the can... but haven't had a chance yet to get to the post-production. The show took a long time to put together with the length and the movie clips.

I'll have it up Friday AM though.

Your order is messed up, but you nailed one of us really well.

Sam said he would put a bullet in his head if Lucas made another Star Wars.

I beg Mr. Lucas to make another Star Wars!

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy? Are you serious. This has to be a canidate for the worst movie of the year. I am sure Douglas Adams is rolling in his grave!

My top ten:

1. Brockback Mountain
2. 40-year Old Virgin
3. Crash
4. History of Violence
5. Sin City
6. Batman Begins
7. Capote
8. Cinderella Man
9. Walk the Line
10. Syriana

clovis8,

Considering Adams wrote the majority of the screenplay to Hitchhiker's before he died, I'd have to say I doubt he's rolling.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

More roles for Martin Freeman.

If every Cinecast installment was and lengthy and engrossing as parts one and two of episode #70, I might never leave the house. Good stuff.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galazy I though was thoroughly entertaining. From the musical opening number, I knew I was going to like it. I hated Crash. It was manipulative, and I don't know if I was supposed to like and/or relate to these characters in the end, but they were...unlikeable. Most of the stuff that made the top ten lists are movies that haven't come anywhere near central Maine. I anxiously await these titles on DVD.

I was wondering if anyone's seen Saint Ralph, which might be the best movie I've seen this year. Or, more appropriately, the movie I most enjoyed. Despite a couple unnecessary scenes that didn't quite do anything, the story was solid, the acting was amazing (the kid, Adam Butcher...awesome is the only word; Campbell Scott, very Campbell Scotty).
