Cinecast #65: Eye For An Eye
Munich: For the past couple of decades, Steven Spielberg has oscillated between history and fantasy -- "The Color Purple," "Empire of the Sun," "Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan" ... "ET," "Hook," "Jurassic Park," "Minority Report." In 2005, Spielberg released one of each: popcorn muncher "War of the Worlds" and now Munich. And both films have as much to say about the present as they do about the past and future. "War of the Worlds" resonates with post-9/11 dread while "Munich," an account of the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis, reflects on the on-going battle between Israel and Palestine. Adam was moved by "Munich," concluding that it could be Spielberg's "most graceful and least manipulative" film yet. Although Sam admired the filmmakers' thoughtful approach to the difficult subject matter, he didn't find the story nearly as compelling as Adam did.

Just a note regarding your discussion of Munich, which I thought was very interesting. At one point, you referred to the 1967 war between Israel and Palestine. It should be noted that the the war was between Israel and it's three Arab neighbors; Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The PLO at that time was still very much a creation and tool of the Arab League. It is interesting that the true solidification of the Palestinians as a national identity was a result, rather than a cause, of this war.
Best,
admarcus
Sorry, Craig... there are quite a few to get through and pick from. I remember your list though. Only one to mention Romper Stomper.
Ari... absolutely right, and Spielberg's film makes that point pretty clearly.
EMMET OTTER'S JUG BAND CHRISTMAS!
There is an unspoiled love in the world, and that is the love an otter has for his mother.
It was available on DVD, but is out of print right now. Maybe next Christmas?
I don't think Snatch should feature on any Top 5 list. I was always a fan of Tim Curry's devil in Legend.
Love the show, absolutely love it to bits. I take it with me on my iPod shuffle and use it as an excuse to get outdoors and walk.
But this week's show keeps giving me issues... I don't know whether it's my connection or your server. But it constantly downloads an incomplete file. The first attempt was about 2 minutes long... I had to go into my hard-drive and delete the file. Then the second time it stopped at 53 minutes. ITunes registers it as a finished download though.
Anyone else having this problem?

Aren't podcasts a bit fiddly on a Shuffle?
I totally agree with both of you guys when you talked about that "sex scene/fake flashback" in Munich. It is pretty cheesy. It is laughable and it almost ruined the film. Munich is one of my favorite films of 2005, though.
I have to say that the ending of Munich didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.
I also didn't have a problem with the flashbacks throughout the movie showing the Israeli athletes being held hostage. It's true that Avner couldn't possibly know what went on, but I viewed those as his mind thinking about the event, picturing what went on. The events haunt him throughout the movie.
It is the best movie of the year.
