Cinecast #63: Jackson's Monkey Trial

Put your hands on me, you damn dirty ape!

King Kong: The undisputed "big movie" of the holiday season, Peter Jackson's follow up to his Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy has Adam and Sam in a rare fighting mood. At three hours, and with three distinct chapters, King Kong has lots to like, and lots to dislike -- Adam and Sam just happen to disagree about what those things are. Is Kong a solid story with indulgent effects? Or a failed concept that nevertheless offers a fantastic spectacle? Also, some talk about previous incarnations of the great ape story, featuring lengthy digressions about Jessica Lange's you've-got-to-see-it-to-believe-it performance in the 1976 version.

Also on the show, some thoughts on the impending awards season, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, and our Top 5 Villains Preview.

Music by George Prentice ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Great episode guys, and I'm completely in the "Best movie of the year" camp for this one, with the possible exception of Downfall, which blew me away with its stellar acting and an incredibly acute knowledge and wisdom about the goings-on in Hitler's over-zeleous mind.

Anyhoo, quick question, is '40-Year Old Virgin' a good date movie by any chance?

Generally I would say yes... but maybe not a first date movie. There is a lot of explicit language and sexual situations, which could make someone uncomfortable. But if you know the person well and think they wouldn't mind...

Hasn't Peter Jackson lost weight!

Adam, did you realise King Kong is played by the Martin Hammet character in 24 Hour Party People?

Hey Sam, Dennis Quaid was never nominated for an Oscar for "Great Balls of Fire."

There is a God.

I saw Kong and thought it was a lot of fun. I wonder if you guys maybe expected a little too much of it. Comparing the depression-era scenes unfavourably with "Cinderalla Man" - c'mon on!

The movie is about a giant ape that climbs a building and falls off. It aint Shakespeare...

Perhaps not Shakespeare, but definitely an intelligent and surprisingly well told "blockbuster". I thought it was a tale so wonderfully told and written, that I'd love it to nab more than just the Best Special Effects oscar.

And as it turns out, Adam, 40-Year Old Virgin makes for a great first date movie.
