Cinecast #58: La Vie Austen

I've been waiting my whole life to play Elizabeth Bennet ... and to hear what Adam and Sam would say about me.

Pride and Prejudice: Only the most obsessive Jane Austen fanatic could have been clamoring for another adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" (according to IMDb, there have been at least eight screen adaptations of Austen's novel). But there's a reason why writers, actors and directors keep returning to the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. It's the ur-romantic comedy: the first and still one of the best. Adam and Sam agree that director Joe Wright's adaptation is well cast and nearly note-perfect -– Adam just wasn't as moved by the 'music' as Sam was.

And speaking of music ... Cinecast #58 is full of it. We take a quick look at Chris Columbus' new screen adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical "Rent", and wade through a pile of Listener Feedback regarding our Top 5 Music Moments. Plus, Massacre Theatre, Adam's thoughts on "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and our Top 5 Date Movies.

WARNING: This show contains a potentially lethal dose of Cinecrack. There's a reason we do two shows a week -- to avoid shows like this one that run well over an hour. Please forgive us.

Massacre Theatre presented by the Elemental-Gear podcast, bringing you insightful computing technology opinions, discussions and reviews.

Music by Bobby Bare Jr. courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Sadly Keira Knightley's beauty doesn't come across in radio. I shall look forward to this on the journey to work... on Saturday

Mispronounciation that made me chuckle:

"A-on Flux" - incorrect.
"Eee-on Flux" - correct

I can understand how you could read it that way even though I'm not an Aeon Flux fan. Although i'll see anything with Theron for numerous reasons. And when i say numerous, it means i think she has a great phanny.

I think we share similar hair-related problems, Adam.

A few good date movies: Chungking Express, Better Off Dead, Bronx Tale, and aren't horror films supposed to make your date jump into your arms and hold you tight? So maybe Halloween. Or if you rent Suspiria you can both fall asleep together.

Good call on Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. In my, not so humble opinion, anyone who does not love these films is dead inside. These would be in my "top five films to test a relationship".

Concerning the show length: the longer, the better.

I totally agree Eric. I love the long shows. Saves me from listening to other inferior podcasts!

Wait a sec, how about Top 5 Christmas movies. I know both Adam and Sam have mentioned Christmas movies in the past, i suppose there would be enough good ones to merit a list.

How did you guys pick the movies for the Hitchcock marathon?

I'm glad to see Strangers on a Train made your list. It's Hitchcock's best and most underrated film.

I just caught Shadow of a Doubt by Hitchock and starring Joseph Cotton a couple of weeks ago on TCM. I couldn't believe how excellent the movie was. It would have been another movie to watch.

Notorious is also an excellent choice. This'll probably be the first marathon that I try to play along with.

That's good... we're actually going to throw Shadow in there to discuss briefly.

p.s. Adam, if you think the mother in the recent film version of Pride and Prejudice is over the top just wait until you see the A&E miniseries! Colin Firth's Darcy is sheer perfection, he's even better than the magnificent Sir Laurence Olivier.

Geof, care to elaborate? I'm a middle-ground fan, don't love all of his work, but by no means hate all of his work. just curious.

Tarintino's voice is irritating, and you can hear it channeled through every character in any of his films. The dialogue is too clever for its own good. I liked Spike Lee's shot at him in Bamboozled. Still, Pulp Fiction was excellent.
