Cinecast #56: Biopic Prison Blues

What!? You don't know the Cinecast theme? Better tune in to Cinecast #56.

Walk the Line: The music of Johnny Cash is alive and well in director James Mangold's Cash biopic "Walk The Line" -- even as performed by Cash stand-in Joaquin Phoenix. In his attempt to get the full measure of the 'Man in Black', however, Mangold sticks too closely to formula. Phoenix certainly does Cash justice, and Reese Witherspoon is charming as June Carter; but both Adam and Sam can't help feeling that the movie sacrifices depth for breadth.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, the most embarrassing installment of Massacre Theatre EVER, and a look ahead to our Top 5 Music Moments.

Massacre Theatre presented by the Elemental-Gear podcast, bringing you insightful computing technology opinions, discussions and reviews.

Music by Martin Sexton courtesy of Kitchen Table Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

You guys should of reviewed the Harry Potter movie.

You gave a lame ass excuse not to review it. Are you guys afraid that if you gave a negative review the Potter fans will hunt you down and put curses on you?

You've reviewed movies in the past with HUGE fan bases before.

I was much more interested in Serenity than Harry Potter. What can I say.

It's not about the Potter fan base -- it's about a) not having time to see more than one new movie last week and wanted to see Walk the Line more, plus b) not having any real context for our discussion. You don't have to watch the TV series, Serenity, for example, to enjoy the movie... but watching the 4th Harry Potter movie without having seen #2 or #3, what could we possibly bring to the table?

I know the Potter film will be a masterpiece, so a review would be superflous.

Off topic, but I was listening to you guys review Wedding Crashers, giving it a pretty warm review. I know you get this a lot, but never before have I wanted a film to end so quickly. I'll stick with Old School :)

You guys are way off base on "Walk the Line". I really enjoyed it. I agree the structure was not great, but the preformances are amzing. It makes RAY (where he didnt even sing) look pathetic. There will be a best actor oscar for sure. Also, when Witherspoon is in the car she does not say "IT BURNS BURNS BURNS", she mutters it burns once under her breath. Thats all. It was great.

I agree that the scenes outside the preformance are not great, but the preformances are SO great that they easily make up for other limitations. I did find myself waiting for the nexr music scene. They were SO good. I think it is some of the best musical preformances ever caught on film.

How can we be way off base when we also said the performances are amazing?

She may not say, "it," but I'm 99% sure she says "burns" more than once... but again, I think Witherspoon makes the scene work despite it being clunky.

I saw Serenity without having seen the tv show, and it sucked. Maybe if I had seen the tv show I could of have become more interested in the charcters, but Serenity bent me over a table and had its way with me.

Serenity was sickening. You guys were way off base on that review.
