Cinecast #55: Families That Eat Together, Stay Together

Quit screaming, Cinecast #55 isn't THAT bad.

Horror Marathon #2: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: "The podcast which you are about to hear is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of two youths, in particular Sam Hallgren and his in-valid co-host, Adam Kempenaar...." If you don't get the reference, it's because you've avoided "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" for as long as we had. And you were probably hoping we'd tell you to go on avoiding it, weren't you? Well, in Week 2 of our six-part Horror Marathon, we've got a surprise for you -- don't fear the meathook.

Also on the show, a bit of Listener Feedback and our Top 5 Dysfunctional Families.

Music by The Handsome Family courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Great show, guys. I was thinking: Doesn't the Texas Chainsaw Massacre belong on the "Dysfunctional Families"-list?

I guess another way of looking at it is that the Leatherface family isn'really dysfunctional as a family, although they're completely dysfunctional in any other way.

Anyway, can't wait to hear your comments on Suspiria, a mad and wonderful film.

Just thought I would let you know, I'm 21 and I finally saw The Breakfast Club a month ago. It honestly didn't effect me in the way I know it has affected so many people about 5-10 years older than me, but I did find it far darker and far more interesting than I was expecting. I guess I always assumed it was just a cheesy teen comedy from the 80s...

I thought the Royal Tenenbaums might have been on your lists, but I'm not sure where you guys stand on Wes Anderson. After seeing the trailer (hilarious), I can't wait for the Squid & the Whale to hit English shores.

Thanks, Adam.

Talking of soundtracks, the one for Squid & the Whale sounds a great one. Thanks for playing The Handsome Family in the latest podcast, as I'd forgotten how much I like them.

Hey guys, i think a worthy addition to the top 5 would been "The Myth of Fingerprints".
Great show

I'm still reeling from the Cinecast dual admiration of the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I found this film so utterly loathsome I was sure that at least Sam would share in my hate.

Bewildering to be sure.

But would I have enjoyed this film when I was 16 or 22 or even 28 rather than 32? Perhaps. Possibly it's the same switch in my head that turned rusty small town carnival rides from an enjoyable thrill into a miserable potential date with death?

I suddenly hate horror movies, and none of today's whippersnappers "get" the most significant teen movie of my childhood. God, I'm just so old.

The Breakfast Club. I still get sucked in every time I happen to see it on TV.

Maybe I'm strange for liking it, but did anyone ever see "Stuart Saves His Family"--the film based on the SNL skit? I always thought it was funny & it would fit in with the dysfunctional family top 5 (and probably the Guilty Pleasures one, too, if that ever arises).
