Cinecast #51: Cold Blooded

Catherine, it's colder out here than most of your performances. Let's warm up to Cinecast #51.

Capote: Everyone involved in the new film "Capote" shows a lot of restraint -- star Philip Seymour Hoffman, putting on an acting clinic in the showy title role; screenwriter Dan Futterman; and director Bennett Miller all keep Capote, the man, from overshadowing "Capote," the film. If only Adam and Sam had shown as much restraint in their recording of podcast #51. Cinecast celebrates its half-century mark by producing the first edition to clock in at over an hour. We hope you'll indulge us. (We'll be back to our usual, twice-weekly format next week.)

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre, the concluding film in our Western-a-Week Marathon -- Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" -- and our Top 5 Biopics.

Music by Kelly Hogan courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

A note regarding Whe Wild Bunch.

I was not surprised that I hated this movie, even though I loved the other ones. Two Words.

Ernest Borgnine (I may be spelling that wrong)

Sure, he was good in Marty, but anything else he's in - my god, but he's horrible. He speaks and acts exactly the same way in every role, whether it's Marty, The Black Hole, or the TV sitcom, The Single Guy. Every time I see him, I'm taken right out of the movie and I wonder "What was the casting director thinking". It's amazing to me that anyone ever thinks that putting him in a movie is a good idea. I know I'm being harsh, but I find him that jarring.

I think it's funny that you guys are always in a hurry to finish things up. I wish the show was even longer that it is. I think your commentary it so interesting that I hate when it has to be suddenly cut off to move on.

Also, I finally got a chance to get ahold of "Rio Bravo", which has to be the first Western movie I've ever watched from start to finish. It was a really interesting film, and I plan on hitting up more of the Western Marathon films in the coming weeks.

Interesting in a good way, Brian?

When will Ad and Sam be putting creating a Top 5 out of the Westerns they saw?

Well, something like 'The Western Awards', I guess. Is Billy Crystal hosting?

No, by David Ayer. Here is an article printed in The Guardian last Friday (05-11-04).

Remake of The Wild Bunch, one of the most celebrated westerns in cinema, is to get a Hollywood makeover.
Sam Peckinpah's 1969 film tells the tale of ageing outlaws trying to score one last hit in an American West that is fast disappearing.
The planned remake will take place in modern Mexico and the plot will involve the CIA, drug cartels and a heist.
The remake's writer-director is David Ayer who penned several action films such as 2001's Training Day and 2003's S.W.A.T. "I've introduced a present day setting, but there are very masculine themes and characters from the original that are still very relevant," he told trade magazine Variety.
Ocean's Twelve producer Jerry Weintraub added: "It's not a Western anymore, but it still has the 'Wild Bunch' characters and the elements that made the original film so memorable."
Filming is to start next summer.

I like the Mexico idea - hopefully Mexico City or somewhere. Perhaps Ayer will be more repectful in his treatment of horses.
