Cinecast #39: War 4 Sale

Listen to Cinecast #39

Considering Andrew Niccol's track record ("The Truman Show," "Gattaca"), it's not surprising that the writer/director's latest, "Lord of War", is more ambitious than the film's glossy gun-show trailer makes it out to be. But ambition alone doesn't make for a great movie. A strong, charismatic performance from star Nicolas Cage can't save "War" from being "very flawed" (Adam) or "maybe the worst film I've seen this year" (Sam). Some bickering about the film's supporting cast adds to the fun.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre -- presented by Movies Passions.com -- and a look ahead to Friday's Top 5 Movies With A Conscience.

Music by Alejandro Escovedo courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Yay Sam!

Saw "Lord of War" at an early preview and, man -- what a stinker.

I think it's probably worse because it thinks it's being so goddamned important.

I like the ideas that it raises, but god help anyone who tries to sit through the film, and its unending voiceover, and Nic Cage's atrocious pseudo-Russian performance.

hi guys

saw Lord of War at a press screening her in Dublin y'day, and I agree, it's not a bad movie, but it's far from a great one.

While Niccol is making an important point about the proliferation of guns and the devestation of Africa by warlords, he blunts his dramatic sword in the final title card, blaming the five largest world economies and, for some reason, the UN for the arms problem, rather than the sleepy-eyed, drug addicted, alcoholic adulterer we've just spent the last two hours watching.
It's still a million times better than S1MonE or whatever that garbeled nonsense was titled.
