Cinecast Mailbag (8/24)
Is it safe to come out of hiding for a little mailbag? Or are we still targets of that cinematic fatwa?
I've been listening to your show, I've e-mailed you a few times, and generally, I've become a fan of your podcast. But, your list of overrated movies, frankly, makes me want to punch you both in the face. - Wesley RumphWesley. You're not alone, my friend. And isn't that the fun of Overrated Lists? (And to Wesley's credit, he did add that he had no intention of "literally" punching Adam and I in the face. I am, however, still waiting for the figurative punch in the face.) Overrated lists are by definition contentious. If we all agreed that a film was overrated, it wouldn't be overrated, would it?
E-mails from listeners so far (and we've only revealed our 6-10 overrated!) seem to be falling into two camps: 1) "You're an idiot. You totally missed the point of Brazil" and 2) "I'll see your 'Brazil' and I'll raise you "Citizen Kane." Fury and competitiveness. Sometimes in the same e-mail.
For the record, I've seen every movie on my top 10 list more than once. In some cases, the movie's flaws only became apparent to me on a second viewing (eg, "American Beauty"). In other cases, a second viewing only cemented my original impression ("Usual Suspects," "Fight Club," "The Royal Tenenbaums").
Some more overrated movies from Cinecast listeners:
"The Matrix" - I always thought people who like this had really missed out on Hong Kong Movies and (the novels) of Phillip K. Dick. (Magnus from Berlin)
"Gone With The Wind" - A time capsule of wish-fulfillment of nostalgia that has us follow for over three hours one of the most despicably shallow characters in film history. (Tony Leal)
"Star Wars" - If I can't even stop myself from nodding off during the Death Star scene at the end of the first one, it's hopeless. (Jared, Boston)
"Clerks" - I really wanted to like this movie, which was such a hit with so many of my friends. But the movie just bored me, and I felt there were some misogynistic overtones. I thought "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy" were much better, but I almost didn't see them because I disliked Clerks so much. (Susanna Montezemolo, Washington, DC)
"Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (and really the whole series) - Awful. Everything about Lord of the Rings is paint-by-numbers trash. (Tom Haley, Wheaton, IL)Keep those e-mails coming!

SPIDERMAN!!!
The figurative punch in the face will come from me when the inevitable "Chinatown" and "Network" appear in the top 5.

My friends all love Clerks, too. It makes me want to do just about anything else. Pick fluff from the carpet perhaps. I think I've found just about every other Kevin Smith movie SO much better.
I agree with Brazil. I know I've seen it, and I know I don't recall anything about it, which if nothing else tells me that it made no impression at all.
I liked The Matrix, but only the first one. I love Star Wars. It's not a Great movie, but it's a movie that I love dearly, which is a much different thing. LoTR seems paint by numbers because it practically invented its genre. That's not "tired" it's "foundational". And the movies have to retain a certain amount of the action of the books in order to, you know, be the same story. (And this being said by someone who couldn't stand reading the books. Go fig.)
I thought I was the only one who could not stand the LoTR series. A friend of mine tried to make me like the series by watching with me but somehow the movie could not hold my interest. I did not care for what happened to Frodo and his friends, or if he could get the ring.
and i'm calling your "Citizen Kane" a bluff...
magnus from berlin
Why did Tom Haley even see Return of the King if he hates the whole "awful," "paint-by-numbers" series? Yeah, that's what I'd like to know.
I thought "The Passion Of The Christ" was overrated and actually just a christian snuff film, but the all time overrated film HAS to be "Titanic"
I couldnt agree more with Clerks. I've tried and tried and can not seem to make it through the entire film. I know it's a cult classic, but I just don't see how.
On the other hand, to call Star Wars overrated is a crime, it might look cheesy now but in 1978 it was visually unbelievable to me (a 5 year old boy), and for that reason I consider it a classic.
I'd like to nominate Adam and Sam's top 10 films of all time as my list of most overrated films of all time. Overrated lists are so arbitrary. They are designed to put critics in a superior position to some of the best films ever made, just to piss people off.
After hearing your comments about Brazil and Barton Fink, it makes me wonder why the hell I even bother listening to you two. It must be the soothing homo-erotic tone of your voices.
Oh snap, you got us good with the gay comment.
Yes, I think if you listen to last week's shows and today's show it's quite clear we don't understand the arbitrary nature of lists and are determined to feel superior and piss people off. That's EXACTLY what we were going for. You got us again...
"You got us again..." Double snap!
YES! I knew that I'd get you. Hah! Put that in your pipe and smoke it! You and your gay superiority complex.
Wait a minute... was that sarcasm in that last post? You forgot to use the sarcasm emoticon, Adam!
Here it is, for future reference-
