Cinecast #31: The Last American Virgin

A veteran of Chicago's famed Second City stage, "40 Year-Old Virgin" star (and co-screenwriter) Steve Carell has made a career out of playing what Adam calls "the masculine misfit." Unassuming, asexual and decidedly normal-looking, Carell is a born character actor, which makes it a pleasant and unlikely surprise to see him leading the ensemble cast of a big budget summer comedy. More surprising still, "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" is the funniest film of the year. Adam and Sam agree that "Virgin" is what "Wedding Crashers" should have been: unapologetically crass and funny as hell.

Also on the show, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and a look ahead to this week's Top 5... Overrated Movies.

Music by Bobby Bare Jr's Young Criminals Starvation League courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Brace yourselves, you knew this was coming...

So 'Brazil', it's been done, tried themes ... hmmm.
Not very compelling argumentation consider most of the movies you compare it to came out after Brazil.
Anyway thats a pretty bold statement coming for someone with 'Dark City' on his top 5 Sci-Fi movies list...

you better prepare more convincing arguments for you top 5

I think I only compared it to 1984 and 12 Monkeys... of the two, only 12 Monkeys obviously came out after. Whether the theme(s) have been done before or not though, the bottom line is that the movie just didn't do much for me.

Ohhh, I love you guys, but you just shot yourself in the foot and stabbed me in the heart. American Beauty? Brazil? THE USUAL SUSPECTS?! I've been with you on every top 10 list until now and I always got mad when people complained about "bad lists"... but... BAH!

You're going to get soooooo many responses for this one : )

Keep up the good work!!!

Jake (I'm twitching right now)

While I am in total agreement with you concerning American Beauty and Kevin Spacey, I nearly take offense to anybody insinuating that Brazil and especially The Natural are overated in any way.

While your comments on Brazil lead me to wonder which version you saw (I prefer the original version shown at Cannes or Venice I forget which). However I agree that if you saw the American broadcast cut (which is not only a different movies, but a really bad one) I too would think this film overrated. I suggest that you give it another shot-the Criterion Collection has the European cut and it is much more flushed out then any of the American versions.

Now call me a sap, but The Natural to me is one of those fanastical hollywood fables that works for me every time I see it. I am not even a baseball fan, yet the story of Roy Hobbs has the feel of a tried and true American Folk tale. I get sucked into the story and llove the performances (save for Kim Bassinger). I actually just watched this film again before writing this with my 1 year old daughter, and like always every time I see Redford and Close on screen together I start tearing up. If I am a fool for getting sucked into this film, then I enjoy being foolish for two hours every time it's on.

Great show,

Aaron Davies

I'll agree with you all on:

Scarface, American Beauty, and Usual Suspects.

I respectfully disagree with:

Brazil and Collateral.

I've no particular opinion on:

Life Is Beautiful, Gods & Monsters and Royal Tenenbaums.

But these make me think you might be insane:

Fight Club and The Natural.
