Cinecast #30: Revenge of the Top 5's
Top 5 Revenge Movies? No problem. Or so we thought. As it turned out, one of the oldest narrative conventions proved to be one of the hardest Top 5's to assemble. Revenge on film, it seems, is often resolved with mindless bloodshed -- not always a recipe for cinematic greatness. But you didn't think we'd really leave off "Kill Bill," did you? Also on the show, the first (and last) "Judging A Book By Its Cover" segment, featuring our review of the first 15 minutes of "The Upside of Anger." Plus, our Overlooked DVD Picks of the Week.

Here's the link to the Comedian trailer you discussed in the show.
Wasn't "Braveheart" a revenge movie? If so, I would definitely have it in my Top 5.
A great Top 5 would be the best fights in movies.
A list of great revenge movies and no mention of Jaws IV: The Revenge? It even has the word 'revenge' in the title!
Revenge of the Nerds...hello!
Actually, Election is a great movie about the fulitily of revenge. Matthew Brodrick's character tries to get some sort of revenge angainst the over achiever types in a high school and of course has it blow up in his face.
Sorry, I wasn't clear about Election, Matthew Brodrick's charater gets tries to get revenenge on Reese's character for getting his friend fired from the school and divorced. She just happened to be an over-achiever.
OK, so I was one of the people that mentioned Joan Allen in The Upside of Anger. I hadn't seen the film, but I was going on good word from USA Today (4 starts) and Ebert (4 stars).
I just saw it for myself this weekend. While I think Joan Allen is fine in the film and certainly has some great moments, the film itself was indeed truly awful. The screenplay is all over the place - even adding on a "surprise" ending that seemed truly out of left field.
Sorry guys. At least I wasn't the only one.
My top 5 revenge movies would be:
1)The Incredibles - The more I see this film the more I enjoy it. It is an amazing accomplishment in animation, as an art, not a genre, and the plot is certainly revenge driven from the villan's side.
2)Kill Bill I & II - The whole thing is about revenge and it's undeniably cool. How does a guy that seems so not cool, make such cool movies over and over again?
3)Braveheart - There was an element of revenge for his lost love and also for the oppresion of his people and country.
4)Batman - Obviously a revenge story, that became more pointed when it's revealed that The Joker killed his parents (part of Tim Burton's back story obsession).
5)The Punisher - It's a "guilty pleasure" movie for me. What can I say?
What about these two movies...
1. Westside Story
2. Fatal Attraction
