Cinecast #24: Bearly Watchable

Yeah, we're just as bored as you are.

Despite his success with Jack Black in "School of Rock" and his obvious affection for Michael Ritchie's 1976 original, Richard Linklater seems surprisingly out of his element directing Billy Bob Thornton and a host of obnoxious kids in this "Bad News Bears" remake. For the director of Gen X classics such as "Slacker" and "Before Sunrise," "Bad News" is a rare misfire.

Also on the show, we unveil our Overlooked DVD Picks of the Week and count down our Top 5 Movie Antiheroes.

Music by Johnny Society courtesy of Messenger Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

Another great show guys... My only problem with it is that you still try to justify everything! We all love the show the way it is! If a few people have problems with you giving too much away, or you review movies from the 70s, or your massacre theater is too easy, they'll get over it and you don't have to appologize! Its your show. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you so much for all the time and energy it must take to have 2 shows a week!

To the person who left the "homosexual" comment -- it's cool if you stand by it with your name. But anonymous? Sorry, it's getting deleted.

you guys suck. all you do is bash every film that comes out. you critic a movie to death. movies are about going out and having fun and being entertained. you should be called movie bitchers, not movie reviewers.

Ah, there it is... It took almost 5 months but we finally got the, "Movies are just about entertainment!" email. I can't believe it took this long. You know what -- if movies are just about fun for you, that's great, but don't ask us to be like you, and we won't ask you to be like us, OK? And if you actually listened to the show, you'd know we like plenty of movies. Recent films we've reviewed and one or both of us have liked or loved include: Hustle & Flow, Wedding Crashers, Dark Water, Land of the Dead, Cinderella Man, Star Wars 3, Crash, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... I could go on and on. Seriously, you're entitled to think movies are just about entertainment... just go peddle it somewhere else.

It's "critique". And not everyone finds the same things entertaining. The task, I-can't-stand-by-my-opinions-anonymous, is to find reviewers who share your same standard of entertainment. Or else recognize that you don't. I have a friend who is a negative barometer for me as far as movie reviews go. If he likes it, I won't. If I liked it, he won't. And that can be as useful as agreeing.

In case you missed the previous show, I do believe they both liked Hustle & Flow. You could try it and possibly be surprised or confirm that you couldn't disagree more. Both of which would tell you something valuable. Welcome to the one size doesn't fit all world.

Strawberry ice cream sucks! Refute.

Just as you mentioned how "another film we agree on -- is this getting boring for our listeners", that is the exact thought I had; you two agree too much. And it is beginning to get boring. People will stop listening if you guys don't argue more. Of course, there is the original Siskel and Ebert, which was at its best when they argued. A less obvious comparison is to those two people from 60 Minutes back 20 years ago; I don't remember their names, but they were famously lampooned by SNL. It was interesting because they argued.

Believe me, we agree that the shows are more entertaining when we disagree (i.e., Star Wars, Sin City). But the last thing we're going to do is argue for argument's sake. We don't go into the show planning on agreeing or disagreeing... whatever happens, happens. All we can do is share our honest reaction. If that's not exciting enough and people turn away, oh well. We'd lose listeners a lot faster if we started being dishonest in our reviews.

I agree that Siskel and Ebert were great when they argued.Very passionate. Speaking of Ebert, has anyone read his review for Stealth? I swear it reads like a middle schooler's book report. He just gives a run down on all of the plot points, as if to prove her actually seen the movie. Maybe he just felt a poorly executed movie deserves a poorly executed review.....

I love the "movies are about entertainment" comment. It's funny that this guy bothered to listen to your show if that's his attitude. Maybe someone somewhere is doing a movie review podacast where they just say, "My opinion on this movie is irrelevant, since movies are just about entertainment." For every single movie they review.

Every movie fan knows that different movies should be judged on different criteria, which is why when you review Wedding Crashers you're comparing it to Old School as a benchmark, rather than Cinderella Man.
