Cinecast #21: The Fantastic Bore
Finding the precise imbalance between melodrama and uninspired special effects, the new "Fantastic Four" has Cinecast hosts Adam and Sam performing oratorical gymnastics trying to find something nice to say.
Also on the show, a review of "Dark Water," director Walter Salles' remake of "Ringu" creator Hideo Nakata's 2002 psychologically-charged ghost story "Honogurai Mizuno Soko Kara." Starring Jennifer Connelly and featuring a great supporting cast (John C. Reilly, Tim Roth and Pete Postlethwaite), "Dark Water" surprised us with its subtlety, intelligence and genuine creepiness. Despite a slightly unsatisfying ending, it's a movie worth seeing that earns its scares ... Plus, Listener Feedback, Massacre Theatre and our Top 5 Comic Book Movies.
Music by Neko Case courtesy of Bloodshot Records ... Cinecast theme music by Age of the Rifle.

when's the 21st show going to be up on iTunes?
Dark Water was a complete bore. Even knowing it wasn't a Horror movie, and not expecting such, I predicted the entire plot within 15 minutes. It offered no surprises, thrills or chills. The actors were all teriffic, though they couldn't save this moving from being dull and uninteresting.

I wish I knew... I don't have any control over the shows appearing. I recall it took a few days for #20 to appear. I know a number of people are going to Advanced--Subscribe to Podcast--and putting in our feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/cinecast and subscribing that way. It doesn't help us move up the rankings, but it does get you the current shows. So you might try that... Thanks.
I tried to do the Advanced--Subscribe to Podcast and 21 appears but for some reason it won't download
Sorry to hear that... I just tried again in iTunes and it downloaded fine. Not sure what it could be...
Did you guys watch the original Dark Water, wonderful film. Shame we have to wait a few weeks to see the new version over in ireland.
War of the Worlds. woeful
Batman Begins...shameful should get frank Miller to write the next script.
Hey Ciaran,
Neither Adam nor I have seen the original Dark Water. Going in to the Salles remake we thought it was enough that we saw Nakata's Ring 2...it seemed like a familiar premise. But what a surprise! Let us know what you thought of Connelly and Co. when it makes its way to Ireland.
And wow. Harsh words for Spielberg and Nolan. I'd agree that War of the Worlds wasn't Spielberg at his best (I think he needs to go back and watch Close Encounters again); but I'm willing to give Christopher Nolan another shot. I haven't given up on this new Batman just yet. (I also have to disagree with your choice of Frank Miller to script Batman...from what I saw in Sin City, Frank Miller is an unrepentent misogynist with a twelve year old sociopath's sense of humor.)
Thanks for writing and for listening!
Sam
As of noon on Tuesday, July 12th show #21 hasn't shown up on my iTunes subscription. I clicked update it still doesn't show up, I get doubles of 17 through 20 and singles of 10 through 16.
What's weird is a friend at work says he got #21 trough iTunes with no problem. Is podcasts through iTunes screwy for other people or just me? :-/
Dave, it's not just you.. it's everybody. It's a problem with iTunes... seems to take a few days for shows to appear. See my comments above. Is it possible your friend has subscribed to our feed by going to Advanced--Subscribe to Podcast and entering our feed? That seems to work.
That's the funny thing... he has no idea how he got it. He doesn't tweak any of his software or hardware, he just has iTunes to launch when the computer turns on. So at around 7pm EST monday night he turned the computer on, went to the bathroom, came back and iTunes was up with #21 available! He told me things in the show so I know he's confused or lying, and he's not one to download it from another source or software....
I'm at a loss... crazy.
Haha, I don't agree at all, but that was a really funny take on Frank Miller. Has that Sin City show been made available? I'll have to check that out.
Ignore Sam on Frank Miller... he's clueless. The 'Sin City' show -- Cinecast #5 -- is available. Click on our Top 5 link.
